Eh...that's a bit hard. I'll give 10 of my favorites, but it's probably missing something and it's not in any order, and some of them may not actually be in my top 10.

Jimi Hendrix

The Mars Volta

B.B. King

Marcus Miller

Victor Wooten

Del Tha Funkee Homosapien

Jurassic 5

Mastodon

Black Sabbath

Led Zeppelin

Others that I would rank highly:

Miles Davis

Herbie Hancock

John Coltrane

B.B. King

Albert King

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Primus

Lots of others

No, he's quite exceptional, and his ability to write music flawlessly in his head is an incredibly rare skill indeed. His fame is based mostly on his concertos and operas, both of which were very well suited to the purity and clarity of his counterpoint. I don't enjoy listening to his music as much as to other composers, but there can be no denying his genius, his massive output (incredible how much he managed to write in his short life), or his effect on music written in the Romantic era. His late operas, symphonies, and Requiem all foreshadowed what was going to happen in the 19th century.

Some composers become well known as synthesizers, who take a number of stylistic ideas and meld them together, bringing them to their highest level of sophistication (J.S. Bach is the greatest example of this), and others as innovators. Mozart was in the latter category, and had he lived longer, he undoubtedly would have continued to push composition towards the Romantic style of compostion.

I think he deserves his reputation. Too bad people didn't think as highly of him when he was alive as they do now.

Heh, never heard of Brahms referred to as 'light.' I hear you, though. One of the reasons Mozart didn't make my top 10 is the prevalance of light-hearted music in his output. I suppose you could say the same of Haydn, but he only made the cut because of his string quartets, which are great.

You don't like the rest of the Brahms violin concerto?

id say its more lighthearted in theme than a good portion of other compositions (stravinsky's rite of spring is still my favorite, though its kind of odd compairing a violin concert to a symphony). anyway, i like the 3rd movement best but it wouldnt be the same without working to it through the other movements.

EDIT: 4th movement, sometimes i mesh the 2nd and 3rd together :p

So I take it you're a big fan of Mozart then? As I mentioned, I don't dislike his work. But as you well know, you'll find plenty of contrast in the outputs of the composers I included in my top 10. Had it been a top 15, Mozart would be there too, and considering that I've studied the work of more than 100 cIassical composers over the years, that's pretty high on the list.

Ever since Amadeus I've been a big fan of Mozart, even if that film isn't historically accurate :P. I know you can find light-hearted pieces in say Beethoven's work (If I were to pick a favourite composer it would Beethoven) but most of his work is emotionally draining. Sometimes I just like to listen to Mozart's concerto for harp and flute and let my mind wander. Also I know next to nothing of the theory behind these great composers, I haven't even heard some of them (i.e Caesar Franke). You are of cousre in a better position to pick a top 10 but to me Mozart is in my top 10 :P.

Agalloch

Porcupine Tree

Red Sparowes

Infected Mushroom

I only listen to Depeche Mode and The Cruxshadows out of those, but I like them , so I'll give you a 5/10

try checking out the last dance if you like the cruxshadows. and if you like depeche mode then you will also enjoy Pride and Fall, De/vision, and one, VNV nation, Red Flag, and Assemblage 23

1. 30 Seconds to Mars

2. Lennex (doubt anyone's even hear of them, they don't even have a label, but they are sweet)

3. Muse

4. Envy on the Coast

5. The Audition

6. Alexisonfire

7. Blindside

8. The Spill Canvas

9. Rise Against

10. Failure (who made the list because of Smoking Umbrellas, the lyrics will make you laugh, youtube it. But the melody's sweet too.)

It's easier if I just link my last.fm page. Judge away.
