Liberal, because the Conservative philosophy usually adds government to our lives.Theokhoth
What?! I thought the whole idea of Conservatives was LESS government involvement?
Also having somebody choose for you is just wrong.
Just take a look at the November election candidates in your state (if you are an American), go to their websites, and look at what they believe in. Then pick the one who you most agree with. That's how it should be done.
Remember you'll weigh in on certain issues more heavily than others. Some people put a lot of emphasis on social laws while others put more emphasis on economic laws. You have your own political identity, it's really not up to anybody else to choose it for you. That's one of the major freedoms you get by living in the USA. Don't give it away.

The idea is great and all, but their morals get in the way of their principles. "Don't vote for liberals! They'll stick their fingers into your lives! If you vote for us, we'll make sure you can't stick your engagement rings onto other men's fingers!"[QUOTE="Theokhoth"]

History's turned out different, unless you consider banning gay marriage, abortion, the usage of certain substances and various religious practices to be "less government in our lives." Historically, it's been the Liberal position that tends toward less government involvement (in fact, the modern idea of "Conservative" that you have is what was once called "Liberalism.") Conservatives do (claim to) like less economic restriction, though.[QUOTE="Capitan_Kid"][QUOTE="Theokhoth"]Liberal, because the Conservative philosophy usually adds government to our lives.kussese

Everybody is different. Don't let anybody choose for you.

That's where we differ. I care more about the stuff that keeps our country going in the long run, so I put emphasis on economic issues. However I am a pretty big liberal when it comes to social laws. I am for a version of gay marriage, a level of welfare and healthcare benefits, and a few other issues. However I put more emphasis on what I feel keeps a country going strong, and that's making sure we have the ability to be self sustainable and provide for ourselves.

I believe the same thing, actually; I simply believe the government is an extension of ourselves and, as such, has a crucial role in the function of our economy.Winston Churchill was not speaking in terms of contemporary American liberalism and contemporary American conservatism[QUOTE="T_P_O"][QUOTE="Duxsox56"]

Neither. I'm more of a libertarian-leaning moderate (at least that's what all the political quizzes tell me I am)

It's amusing, but it's not really intellectually valuable, considering that it's not really even meant to be taken seriously (at least, I hope; Churchill was smarter than that).[QUOTE="theuncharted34"]

Can't live with them, can't live without them.
History has proven that humans need leadership. It's how we operate. Without it, our society quickly crumbles and new factions of leadership are born.
yep. But they're still crooks.
Liberal, because in all honesty I cannot understand the logic behind many of the conservative social stances.

I believe the same thing, actually; I simply believe the government is an extension of ourselves and, as such, has a crucial role in the function of our economy.A government which has been given to much power is a dangerous thing. Already in this country our government has done more harm to our people and to the world than any in the past. This is because we have let them either step over their bounds or completely ignore what they are really doing.
Even if you get the most infallible, pure, and honest people in power, eventually some power hungry person is going to get the power and use it for bad. The only preventative measure we have against that is to never give those people the power.
It's a lost cause because we have already given our government to much power that they'll never give back because to many people require them to survive. We have probably gone past the point of no return and no good will come of it. I just hope I can live my life free from government interference.
Anyway, answering TC for the first time in this thread. I'm in agreement with Wasdie, you shouldn't be asking for people to decide for you.
You can ask them for their arguments and reasons for identifying with an ideological position and then examine whether that's enough to persuade you, that seems fair enough. I'm not going to pick either side for you though, personal research should be crucial to where you align.
Also having somebody choose for you is just wrong.

Don't forgot to actually look up their records. They can say all they want to say about what they believe in, but their voting records will straighten everything out.

Yeah mainstream media is never unbiased and it is best to avoid them at all costs. They are all equally bad at promoting one side over the other, no exceptions.

When you limit the size of government you leave a power vaccuum that is quickly filled up with powerful multinational corporations. As strong economic power can be transformed into strong political power, that small government will quickly grow corrupt and the best way of fighting the powerful corporations will be gone. The corporations will use this to their advantage to further cement their control over the market and drive out competition.
I can't say I would've inferred that from your title and OP, but sorry. Anyway, I'm neither liberal or conservative. Dunno where I am ideologically at the minute.Woah woah guys. Conservatives do (claim to) like less economic restriction, though.Well thats part of the problem. Fiscally I think the Republicans have some good ideas (though they're not all perfect), but socially they are far to extreme and love to spout off about meaningless values that achieve nothing. Additionally, many of the conservatives now who are trying to get re-elected want to use the same tactics that first got us into this economic mess to bail us out. I find a hard time believing that philosophy will fly.
The other thing that bothers me about conservatives is the hypocrisy that exists within their party. Now yes Democrats exhibit some hypocrisy, but conservatives seem to make it prominent in social and fiscal issues. I'm sure we all remember Cheney: "deficits don't matter", and now look all you hear is conservative analysts and blow-hards hammering Obama for not addressing the budget issue. Then there are countless issues you could bring up that serve to illustrate far-right hypocrisy in social situations, from religious freedom (or lack thereof if its not the religion they approve of) to their views on racial profiling, which of course dramatically change if its not their race being profiled.
