Atlas Shrugged was 1200 God-forsaken pages. It could have been condensed a lot, but I guess she really wanted to be thorough.

Ulysses by James Joyce. And I could only ever tackle a few pages at a time, which made it even worse.

The Bible. Sort of. I gave up half way through cause the story didn't seem to be going anywhere.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet, at 973 pages. That will change soon enough, though.

You really have to be interested in the philosophy behind it, because the characters aren't meant to reflect real human behavior. Instead they basically represent different ideas.

I wouldn't read anything by Ayn Rand if I were you. Her writing is rather poor and objectivism is dumb. It's just attempted justification for selfishness. Not to mention Rand was an evil ****. Just my opinion of course :P

by the way, A Farewell to Arms is brilliant. Great taste.

Out of a curious whim I read Moby Dick - and OMFG I don't know if its the longest book ever but it reads like its the longest book ever. Chapter upon chapter on whales and whale history and whale anatomy. The story part is like ... minuscule compared to that. What a waste... whoever called that one of the greatest books ever written was paid to do so.

No, I decided to watch the movie. Of course, that took away all my curiosity and the book has been left on the shelf as a seat for dust ever since.

Stupid of me really, since I was enjoying the book, and it had taken me about two months to read that much anyway; what a waste of time. Will probably re-read (or, READ) it at some point.

My theory is that when books like Moby Dick came out, people had nothing better to do for fun than to sit around and read, so it naturally won acclaim. Then generations later, people just assume it's a great book because of what people said back in the day.

This is the only time Moby Dick has been any good (language warning?). Although I shudder to think that many people have a thing for whales...
