I've been looking into getting a HDTV. I narrowed it down to two possible choices that fit my budget. Which would you say is the better one in terms of qualiy compared to price?

Also, a couple of questions:

1) 1080i VS 1080p. Which is better? Is there that big of a difference in picture on the size of the TVs I've selected?

2) HDMI. What is it and, considering I have an XB360 and not a PS3 (although I migt get one in the future), should I care?

Here are the 2 HDTVs I have selected:

Westinghouse 42" LCD HDTV

Samsung 40" Widescreen LCD HDTV

If you read the description fr the Westinghouse 42'', it says it supports 1080p, but when you look at the specs for the TV,here's no mention of 1080p. Weird.

Samsungs have great TVs, and this Hitachi one my dad bought for only 2k, it's 43 inches and HD ready. I don't really know much about 1080p and whatnot.

well heres the difference: 'i' is better for still images 'p' is better for moving images 'p' is more expensive because it incorperates 'i' aswell the xbox 360 can only run at 720p wheras the ps3 (and most likely future blu-ray players) can run at 1080p in conlucsion it's all overly complicated by 1080p is the way to go

I don't notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p. Many argue that they are the same thing and someone slapped a different name on it. I've seen HD DVDs at Best Buy and I wasn't impressed. Perhaps you have a sharper eye. HDMI is handy, IMO, because it has video and audio in the same single cable. It's good for DVD players that have HDMI outputs. But mainly, not many things have HDMI on them. In the future, we should be seeing more, and rumor has it that Microsoft will have the XBOX 360 installed with an HDMI output to it, but that's heresay. May happen, may not.

Most people can't even tell 720p from 1080p. 1080p is probably more suitable on 50+" tvs. Why LCD? Plasma has better image quality and right now there are some amazing deals going on for 42-50" high quality plasmas hovering around 1k.

I myself have a reliable Samsung HDTV. I like it. Everything's sharp and it has two HDMI inputs.

I've heard that Plasma burns images on your screen if the TV is on for too long, or something of that sort. Is this true? If not then I'll definitely look into a Plasma.

LCD's have a slightly longer shelf-life than Plasma's.  If both of them have 1080p, simply get the cheaper one.  Westinghouse is also a very good (even if unheard of, to some) brand.  My friend recently bought a fantastic 24 inch hdtv/monitor from them for about 500 bucks.

Old wives tale that apply to the first to so generation of plasmas. Most plasmas today are nearly immune to burn-in and at worst, have image retention that a few hours of dvd playing can erase.
