Downtown LA isn't much to cheer about, but anything near the beach (Santa Monica, Venice) is pretty great.

People who hate LA are the ones who can't handle the life out here. They're meant for smaller things in life like suburbia or the farms or some other backwood state. And when they came here they got stuck visiting friends or relatives in the ghetto areas. I mean, would you love a midwest state if your visit was at their trailer park? How can you hate on a state that has Hollywood, the beach, the desert, the snow all within, at most 2 hours of each other? Fantastic weather, fantastic night life, fantastic social scene, music scene, etc etc etc.

Sounds like you're also describing New York, Chicago, Miami, and lets not forget the rich folks of Connecticut (old money!), the Texas oil giants, the detroit rap queens, etc etc etc. And btw, in all of my years of living here in LA, I have never seen a person with a trench coat with a 25 dollar rolex for sale inside. Last time I saw that was in the movie "Coming to America" and that was set in New York. Same thing for exhibitionists (only homeless people I see are the "veterans" near the freeway)... I mean wtf... did you come here in the 80's?

Can't handle it out there? I actually am going to move to Chicago soon because of the university there. It's a very nice city. Unlike LA, which is sick. It's not that I am meant for smaller things in life, I would just rather not live in a dump.

I know a lot of people from Chicago -- they all live out here. Weird. They love their city and tell me I should go visit -- maybe I will. But then they live out here. So I'm in no rush.

The LA environment is not...well, its just not pleasant. People from LA are cool, but the area has a negative effect on them so they come off as being jerks.

I hate the culture, too, especially now. My sister went to school there about five years ago and loved LA. She recently moved back there a month ago and she hates it.

Like I said, I dont hate the people of LA or even the outlying parts, but the core and the culture is what I do not like.

*Oh ya, and the traffic alone is more than enough of a reason to avoid LA

I love how people equate Los Angeles to the rest of California. San Francisco, Sacramento, Bakersfield, San Diego, Orange, all completely different places. But if were talking about how California is everything ... being that it is the richest state (more rich than most countries in the world) and has practically everything (except water -- that is until we properly convert the ocean water to drinkable water) -- yeah I have legitimate bragging rights about my state and the city I live in.

Are you serious? Hollywood is a crap hole. "So-Cal" is terrible. The weather here may be nice for you, but I'm a guy who likes the cold and the snow. FYI, I can "handle" LA. I lived in Chicago for half of my life. Chicago > LA. Illinois > California. Actually, I think the only state that I've been in that I hate more than California is Texas.

amen to that.

we got the best produce

the best food

some of the greatest breweries

Arnold for governor (even if he almost got my mom laid off five times)

Raiders, 49ers, Chargers, Giants, Athletics, and more

Huge economy, ranked just behind Japan and Germany

Desert, forest, snow, and ocean, often all within driving distance.

Some of the best air quality in the country

Mt Shasta, Yosemite, Big Sur, Monterey Bay, and more

California, on the whole, is just awesome. Oh ya, and the rest of the world doesnt really consider us the US. I got to Europe, people are like "Are you American?" all surly and Im like "No, I am Californian" and theyre like "Oh, ok" all cheerful like lol.

California has FAR from the best food. I hate seafood though, so maybe that's why. I just prefer great Burgers/Pizza/Hot Dogs, which is what Chicago does best. And I hate every single sports team from California. I can't wait to watch the Chargers choke on Sunday. Although San Clemente Island has the best strawberries I've ever had.

Actually, it's ranked behind Japan, Germany, the UK, France and Italy....which is understandable given it's population.

when I say food I mean restaurants and chefs. French chefs are leaving their country and where do they go? California, and on occasion Las Vegas. Not to mention all the great culinary schools we have here, and the variety of meats, produce, and specialty ingredients. If I drove 30 minutes, I could get:

Oysters that are still alive
Grass fed beef aged to perfection
Oyster and Chanterelle Mushrooms picked that very morning from the local hillside
and all kinds of ordinary produce fresh from the field

Keep in mind that this is during the winter.

Chicago does have an excellent tradition of producing amazing meat products though, I wont deny that.

You know you're getting close to Los Angeles when you see the big black cloud of smog off in the distance. It's pretty disgusting.

no if you read (and quoted) my entire post you would see I am talking about California, as the person I quoted was talking about

Yea. It is definitely not the city with the best air quality:

[QUOTE="mrbojangles25"][QUOTE="Sajedene"] I love how people equate Los Angeles to the rest of California. Sajedene

amen to that.

we got the best produce

the best food

some of the greatest breweries (dont forget wineries too!)

Arnold for governor (even if he almost got my mom laid off five times)

Raiders, 49ers, Chargers, Giants, Athletics, and more (Lakers, Kings (hockey and basketball), Sparks, Bruins, Trojans)

Huge economy, ranked just behind Japan and Germany

Desert, forest, snow, and ocean, often all within driving distance.(Big Bear, Zuma, Venice, Joshua Tree, Santa Monica, etc)

Lets not forget the list of songs that were written ABOUT California (and if we include the list of songs about cities in LA and the Bay)

And to sum it up:

We Are Californians

Find Yourself Here

The Kings are a terrible hockey team. :P

Yes, but the thread is about LA, and it has the worst air quality in the country.

California has FAR from the best food. I hate seafood though, so maybe that's why. I just prefer great Burgers/Pizza/Hot Dogs, which is what Chicago does best. And I hate every single sports team from California. I can't wait to watch the Chargers choke on Sunday. Although San Clemente Island has the best strawberries I've ever had.DarkPrinceXC

as far as food goes you can find pretty much anything in California. me i'm more oopen minded unlike you so I like to eat other things besides just burgers, pizza, hot dogs so I have a lot more options when looking to go out to eat;)

as far as Chicago sports goes, the teams suck. the bulls  the bears  California>Chicago

You dont have to be self-centered or media-obsessed to love your own state and think its the best.

Wow. And these people are trying to say that Californians aren't elitists.

The only thing I can say about Los Angeles from experience, is that their airport staff suck and are racists to foreigners. I never want to have to take a flight through that airport ever again. :x

You're more open minded than me? How about I don't like the taste of a lot of things. Please don't talk about Chicago Sports teams sucking. Look at the Ducks, Kings, Raiders, Chargers, 49ers, etc. Yeah the Bears and Cubs always choke, but at least the Hawks are finally having a good season. The only good team California has is the Sharks, and they'll fall to Detroit pretty easily I think in the playoffs.

California has 3 hockey teams. ;) I hope you aren't talking about the Chargers either, because they'll never be a top team again. :)

From my visit to LA I gathered the following It's a nice place to go to if you like visiting cities, lots of stuff to do and it's pretty nice. It sure beats a lot of cities I've been to in America besides New York of course.

Yeah we have A LOT of sports teams. And are you just talking smack about the recent years performance of our sports teams or the franchises as a whole? Because a lot of our teams have been on top before. Thats the reason why they are successful franchises (and we housed a lot of great athletes within these teams)

I'm talking smack about Californian hockey teams because only 1 has ever won a Stanley Cup. Plus I just hate the Chargers. :)

I said I hate the Chargers, I didn't say they weren't in the playoffs. BTW check their records for this season. They barely finished with a .500. I guess it's the Bears fault that they have a somewhat tough division (Besides the Lions! :P ).
