I'm only seeing it if there is intense violence and nudity.

duxup

Since the main character is a pacifist who was unwilling to kill a guy who was basically Hitler and said that insects were a precious form of life, and everyone else in the show goes along with it, I'd say there won't be much violence.

Lots of hugging and understanding.

Seriously, the ending of Avatar killed me. In the first 2 seasons Aang probably killed a couple dozen people when he became the water spirit at the end of season 1 and DROWNED AN ENTIRE BATTALION OF NAVY SHIPS. I'm sure his constant blasting people off of rooftops and forcing them off towers and ledges didn't get them killed either, but suddenly its all like "I'm a pacifist, yay for me".

He was always a girly man with the vegetarianism, but for someone who "loved life", he didn't have any problem hurting people during the fight scenes.

I think it's possible, but unlikely. Still, I'll be seeing it, as I loved the series, and my expectations have been completely defied so far.

Night is nowhere near as bad as you guys make him out to be. 6th Sense, Signs and Unbreakable were good. The Village was only ruined by a stupid plot twist at the end. In fact, i'd argue most of his "bad" movies are actually pretty good if you take out the random over the top twist at the end. Assuming that Avatar will have no random over the top twist, it should turn out pretty good.

Also, this isn't supposed to be a scary movie. I think this could be the film that gets him back on track since he won't be able to rely on his standard set of tricks. He's got talent as a director, he just got stuck in a rut.

Lol, I heard about this a while ago.

It seems like a good movie but there's already a controversy.

Apparently some group thinks this might be racist, as this features an all American cast and the characters of the show are from varied Asian nations.

Also, the one person who IS from an Asian nation is the bad guy.

Senor_Kami
This is America though. You throw an all Asian cast and people will think it's a Chinese movie (regardless of nationality) and alot of people simply will not go for it. Similar to how if you had a movie with people from India, the bulk of America would think it would be about Jihad, despite that the fact that India isn't a muslim country nor is it located in the middle east... let alone the fact that even if they were Arab, not every Arab person is praying for Jihad. It's one of those things where you can upset the people who will still see the movie anyways but make it appeal to a broader audience or you can stay racially true and alienate the bulk of middle America. It's like the Prince of Persia movie. The only persian looking people will be the romantic interest, who will be dressed like a whore the entire time because it'll only fly if you imply that Europeans sexually dominate foreign women, a possible goofball/idiot sidekick, you can't make him intelligent, or the villan, which is an acceptable portrayal of a person who looks Arab. This is the truth. It's a sad truth but the truth none the less.

Hate to take the wind out of your sails but Americans are not that simplistic. Many movies with foreign casts succeed beautifully in the states.

Those are exactly the four movies that come to my mind when people say Shyamalan is bad, plus Lady in the Water. Shymalan has more good movies under his belt than bad; his most recent stuff has been horrible, yes, but he's hardly a terrible director.

As for the twist, I liked the twist in the Village, but in any case I don't see how he could incorporate a major twist in this movie since the movie is based on a pre-existing story.

You probably live on the West coast or on the East Coast, but not the south east. Look at the popularity of stuff like Fox News and you'll be shocked how simple minded many Americans are. Name some of these flicks. And don't count a kung-fu movie with an Asian cast. That's like counting a movie about chicken and watermelon with an all black cast as an example of how successful a film can be when you cast minorities in non-stereotypical roles.

I hope its good, but the trailer looked a little cheesy to me to be perfectly honest. I loved the animated series, I hope they don't royally screw it up, but I'll wait for a mass opinion of non critics before I go see it.

If you guys don't like 6th sense and Signs i'd say that's a stronger sign of how out of touch you are with the movie going public than evidence of his movies being bad. 6th sense was oscar nominated for Best Director, Best Writing and Best Original Screenplay. Taken from Rotten Tomatoes.com...

  • The Sixth Sense (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sixth_sense/) ... 85%... "M Night Shayamalan's The Sixth Sense is a twisty ghost story with all the style of a classical Hollywood picture, but all the chills of a modern horror flick."
  • Unbreakable (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/unbreakable/)... 67%... "With a weaker ending, Unbreakable is not as a good as The Sixth Sense. However, it is a quietly suspenseful film that intrigues and engages, taking the audience through unpredictable twists and turns along the way."
  • Signs (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/signs/)... 74%... "With Signs, Shyamalan proves once again an expert at building suspense and giving audiences the chills." Not only that, but Signs was the #1 movie in the country, it dropped that position and then weeks later it came back as #1. That pretty much never happens. The word of mouth was incredibly strong on that movie. Some new films came out and were hot for a week or two, but then it rose back to the top.

Slumdog just swept away the Oscars last year, to name a big one. You're right, I do live on the east coast, south east to be exact. South Florida to be even more exact-er. This is an incredibly diverse place so perhaps I don't know this REAL america where everyone is simple minded.

Fox news may be notorious for it's bias, but every news station is bias and manipulative. Are we all simple minded, or do we regard those who's opinions differ from us as simple minded? I'm no fan of Fox, but I'm sure Foxers are no fan of CNN, which I love.

Why can't I count kung-fu movies? They are the very embodiement of foreign casts!

All I'm saying is don't generalize like that about such a diverse country, especially when it comes to our largest output, media. :)

Why give it to M. Night Shymalan?

Why him?

Why?

clayron

Because of the epic twist ending. The Avatar is not actually an avatar but a alien sent from Krypton bent on protecting the world with his ability to bend wind, fire eyes, ice breath and power of the earth, but one can only wish :?

So that means Shamalamadingdong's going to fail three times, right?

All of his movies haven't failed. The only one that I might question was The Happening and even that wasn't as bad as people were saying. I loved The Lady in the Water.

[QUOTE="RockysCatnipCo"]Actually people have stated that they aren't fans of the show. That isn't a reason?RockysCatnipCo

Obviously I wasn't refering to those people.

"You know no one's actually given any valid reasons..."

My reason was valid I can't stand Westerncartoonsthat try to hard to seem like a Japanese anime series. Also the story really dragged on except for the last movie that was pretty good.

Honestly, I don't see the issue. Should western animators completely ignore the influence of their eastern counterparts? That seems very limiting and narrow-minded if you ask me.
