If you are not into editing videos and music then there is no real reason to get a Mac.

Macs are overrated and they come out with a new OP like every other year. To fix your Mac it costs an arm and a leg, not too much room for upgrades, and finding software sometimes is a real pain. If you don't get the extended warranty you will get harassing phone calls to get it.

I'd prefer a virtual installation since you can have both OS going at the same time. It's a pain having to go back and forth between OS's.

For bussiness you need Windows, i'ld only suggest a Mac if you want a fassion acsessory or for creative art (the begginer programs are better)

Very true, but isn't it faster to work with something in a separate partition rather than a virtual installation - or is the difference negligible?

I feel over my years of use with both, my Macs have been far better in usability and speed. Whilst macs can be a bit more pricey, iv'e found them to be alot more enjoyable and faster for what I needed to use them for. Getting repairs can be alot easier too, as all the parts are supplied from the same people so there isn't a long-haul of a repair process if anything goes wrong. Just my opinion.

Actually, you can buy a Mac for OSX and run Windows in a separate partition so you can get the best of both worlds.

I've never run into any slowdown, but then again I haven't tried it on a laptop. I don't really like laptops that much, I prefer desktops. When I go to college I will probably just have a netbook with Linux on it and my desktop with Linux and maybe Windows on it.

This is true, but if he is using a laptop it might be a strain on the speed and hard disk space.

Very valid point - I mentioned that earlier too. However, it seems the poster is not a Windows fan.

If you are starting college this september, over this summer get a vista laptop (look on slickdeals.net every day, a dell or hp deal always shows up) and when windows 7 ships you get a free upgrade to it.

I would also add http://www.dealsea.com/ as a place to look for deals.

You should see if your college has a Mac store - you could get student discount once you get a valid student ID.

I would use a windows laptop.

When I was in college I would have classes that would require me to purchase cds / programs for the class (a statistics class and a bunch of my math and marketing classes for "game simulations" of a business or market) and NONE of them would work on a MAC. The classmates I had who had Mac laptops had to use the school computer labs to do their work.

Since you're in college and probably won't be the richest person in the world, save yourself some money and get a windows laptop. Macbooks really have no advantages for you and you'd end up spending more money on one.

From what I heard Macs are generally a lot better than Windows in quality and on how lost they can last. If you want ot save money you could try buying a cheap Windows and then reformating it to Linux or Ubuntu.

It depends on the situation and the school really, I work with University of Michigan and most of the users I support are Mac and either dual boot OSX and Windows or use Fusion/Parallels. Most larger/tech savy colleges will have both and offer support for both. I own 3 laptops one a MacBook Pro with OSX and Vista Business, a Dell Mini 9 I converted to OSX and run XP in Parallels and an older Dell with Linux on it running Wine for Windows apps. My Mini 9 goes ever where since I'm able to help both OSX and Windows users. We also offer extreme discounts on both Dells and Apple products to the point of getting a MacBook Pro for like 1,800 bucks which is equivalent to the Air at retail costs. Its still up to you since most classes do use Windows and its products but if your able to purchase a Mac and dual boot or get some VMWare to run certain windows apps then you are fine.

Apple's computers for similar hardware are way overpriced, their laptops are even worse. You can get a lot more power if for the dollar if you skip the Mac.

You should check the requirements for you College of Business... if they recommend Windows then get that because at my college all the stuff is on Windows and using a Mac makes it extremely difficult and just completing your work is a pain...
