Basically the Maine Human Rights Commission (a waste of money created in 2005 by the government) is considering issuing guidelines that would allow students to use the restrooms of the "gender" they "identify" as, not the gender that they biologically are. It would also let them join teams of their choosing.

So a boy who "identifies" as a girl, can use the girls' bathroom, or play on a girl's team.

These guidelines were drafted at a meeting of the Comission where gay-rights groups were invited and conservative groups were not (quite unfair, huh?). Also this law would not only apply to public schools (including elementary ones) but also to private and religious schools (First Amendment be darned, right?).

So Human Rights Commission of Maine just blatantly ignored basic rights of privacy for all girls to uphold the rights of some sexually-confused boys.

Bathrooms are used for a biological reason and should be classified as that. I dont care if you wear makeup and crossdress. You have a penis your male and use the male restroom.

Why do "we" let screwballs push these issues? I'm all for protecting "minorities" (whether that be race or sexual orientation) from being harassed or tormented. But exactly how did it come to the point where such a small minority is forcing issues/policies like this down the throats of everyone else?

So my teenage son can be on all the girls' varsity teams? Think he'll get scouted for women's college ball?

EDIT: So I see a couple of you agree with this, which I guess isn't a surprise. As we can see from the other posts, people would blatantly abuse this nutty policy. So knowing that, what is your metric for determining if someone actually identifies with the opposite sex, versus somebody just feeling like going in the girls' bathroom today?

Aparently not to these folks. I guess you are what you think you are. I guess I should tell the Human Rights Commission that I "identify" as the King and hence they need to obey me and dissolve their stupid waste of money Commission.

In terms of bathrooms, I could see the logic if on a case by case basis, they reserved one bathroom for transgender students to use, but to have a blanket policy? No, thats a terrible idea open to all sorts of abuse. Not sure how I feel about the sports teams either. Purely based on sex, male and female bodies are built differently muscle-wise, the basis for requiring seperate teams, so even if a trans student had a different gender, their body may not reflect that,

Well this would require colleges in the start to allow boys who think they're girls onto the girls sports teams. Which has the colleges worrying about whether they would then be cited by the NCAA for "competitive" advantage.

It kinda reminds me of that movie where some guy didn't get into the NBA so he pretended to be female in order to play for the WNBA (he wore a wig and stuffed his shirt with basketballs and showered with his uniform on).

Also as I pointed out, the proposed guidelines would also be imposed on private and religious schools, not just public ones.

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to force this on the homeschoolers as well.

One one hand, this is a good idea. On the other, I think some safeguards need to be taken. Kids who identify with another gender should have a therapist's letter of recommendation stating as such. That way, there's no risk of flip-flopping without a definitive answer. Also, it brings up another issue, that this is just some bandaid. Those more fluid in their expression of gender will feel alienated by having to choose between both poles, and will wind up receiving feedback regardless of their choice. Unisex, single stall washrooms are much more fitting and progressive than this measure which will just press all the wrong kinds of political buttons.

Actually, this will at least provide a precedent for people to actually try something like that on the collegiate level. So, basically, we will fall behind in the sports world (Olympics, etc) the same way we have in the academic world. All of this "social engineering"..... and we wonder why our students perform so much worse than that of many other industrialized nations.

Wait a minute........... So what if a boy has the "gender" of a girl or vice-versa? You're supposed to be going in there to take a leak or take a dump. What does sexual orientation have to do with that? Why is this even an issue? The issue is that guys can pee into a urinal standing up (which saves water.... for all the environmental wackos). Why in the world does a boy with the "gender" of a girl need to use a girl's bathroom?

I don't think it's that big a deal.

There are many, many kids that identify as the opposite gender.

It's not like a kid can change his or her mind everyday. It's pretty obvious how some one identifies.

Holy s***, I didn't even think of this. This policy might end up causing more water to be used in restrooms! This causes a slight increase in the use of energy! We only have one planet! :o

Nah, we'll just install pissers in both restrooms. And at that point, what is the point of having separate latrines?

Well, the funny thing is, if whomever was pushing this bill listened to real trans people, they'd probably wonder why they're pushing this particular bill. I know a LOT of transfolk, and am one, and I don't believe anyone I know is in full, blanket support of measures like this. The popular consensus among those I know is that a few single stall unisex washrooms per school is optimal. The participating in either sports team is a non-issue for the most part, and should be a special exception kind of thing. But hey, there are those huge LGB(tg) lobby groups with all that money making decisions that large parts of the community aren't supportive of....I suppose we can only oppose it so much.

Does the state pay for therapists who diagnose depression, among other issues? If so, then yes. If not, then no. I'm pretty sure it's a state by state basis down there, much like it is here in Canada.

There are persons here no doubt more knowledgeable than myself in this area, but I'm guessing that gay men don't necessarily identify as women. This seems to be more a transgender thing than a homosexual thing. I think.

Thats not the issue. It's intended for the transgender segmentof LGBT rights.
