Where's your evidence then? I'm pretty sure they are in the same boat.cmpepper23
Do you want me to use the facepalm picture again? How immature are you that you can't have a discussion and instead just say "SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE!??!?! As if you need evidence that books are less influential than music to young people......I mean Jesus Christ step out your door and actually talk to people and live in the world, there's your evidence. Also I found it far easier to find people talking about music's influence on young people than books (because we ALL know how much young people love reading) and films (because so many young people look up to violent film characters and attempt to emulate them and dress like them) http://resources.prev.org/documents/MusicSA_agression.pdfhttp://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.93.3.437http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/118/2/e430.abstract

You are overvaluing how influential music is. Those others mediums can be and have been just as or even more influential on people's lives. Look at the Bible for reference. The people I have spoken to out and about in the world, several mind you of wide variety, were more in line with my thinking. Maybe you live somewhere strange. I do need evidence if I am to believe your claim because my life experiences reflect the opposite.

Well the authors of this article disagree http://archpedi.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/full/162/2/169 They also feel that music is more influential than any other form of media, especially in adloescence. Also "look at the Bible for reference". What world are you living in? We're talking about 2012 for goodness sake, stop embarrassing yourself.

[QUOTE="DarkGamer007"]People can be just as influenced by a book, movie, or video game as they can a musical artist. Arguing that rap music makes a situation worse is illogical in my opinion, real world violence and nature will be far more destructive and influential than any spoken words. **** da Police" did not spread anti-police sediment, the negative views of the police held by people due to bad encounters with the police spread anti-police sediment.JustBeYourself
Can people be influenced by books/movies/video games? Yeah sure, but I've already explained the distinction - video game and movie characters that display misogynistic/violent attitudes simply aren't as likely to influence anywhere near as many young people. And maybe if a book encouraging people to view women as objects and that gang culture is awesome sells a million copies, I'll be a bit more worried about books. And just how many movies have a character that is violent and misogynistic and paints them in a good light to be admired? I'm making the distinction very clear, I don't see why you're pretending like music is in the same boat as books/movies/video games because they're quite evidently not. You're viewing this in a very shallow manner that doesn't relate to the real world.

How exactly am I viewing this in a shallow manner that does not relate to the real world?

  • People were violent, racist, mysoginistic, and awful thousands of years before music was recordable, let alone the invention of rap.
  • The argument that rap presents a negative influence on people is no different than the argument that video games are a negative influence for people, and while it is true that people do no idolize video game characters, the PLAYER is the one creating the violence and destruction in the game. How hearing someone saying "I'm going to shoot someone" any different that acutally shooting someone in a video game? In both cases nobody is hurt, and in the case of the video game the violence is visual rather than spoken.
  • Plenty of books have been published that were considered controversial, some of it justified some of it not, but plenty of books have advocated violence and poor lifestyles.
  • How is rap music more of a bad influence than Celebrities that do drugs, cheat on their spouces, steal, lie, rape and murder?
  • How is rap music more of a bad influence than Politicians that start wars, oppress the rights of people, lie, cheat the system, and are curropted?
  • How is rap music more of a bad influence than actual real world violence that has yet to be scientifically linked to rap? People have been violent before rap and will be violent after rap.
  • How does rap make a situation worse in which a person is exposed to real life violence? Eminem rapping about shoot someone has no effect on me, but if I saw someone getting shot I would be horrified. There is a major distinction between real life and fictional violence/crime. If you make the claim that people cannot differentiate between fictional violence/crime in rap music, or would commit violence or crime because they look up to an artist of rap, then you make the argument that all forms of medium are subject to the same fate, because if people can differentiate violence from a movie, video game, and other genres of music, they sure as hell can do the same for rap.

That's a nice article. I still feel like movies, videogames and books can be just as influential though. There are the HP and TL series, WOW and others to show this. Also I do believe a lot of people still base their entire lives on the Bible and it's teachings so I don't understand why you are overreacting to that.

[QUOTE="DarkGamer007"] People were violent, racist, mysoginistic, and awful thousands of years before music was recordable, let alone the invention of rap.

So what? I'm not claiming rap invented violence and mysoginism [QUOTE="DarkGamer007"] The argument that rap presents a negative influence on people is no different than the argument that video games are a negative influence for people, and while it is true that people do no idolize video game characters, the PLAYER is the one creating the violence and destruction in the game. -Most video games are not rooted remotely in real life. And for those that are - my previous point remains. People are more likely to be influenced by a real life person that they can actually aspire to be like than idolize than some pixels. [QUOTE="DarkGamer007"] Plenty of books have been published that were considered controversial, some of it justified some of it not, but plenty of books have advocated violence and poor lifestyles.

Yeah so what? Did I ever say that books couldn't influence young people? But if you come back into the real world for a moment, you'll realize that the number of teens reading books that encourage violence/misogyny is a tiny fraction of those listening to music doing the same thing. [QUOTE="DarkGamer007"] How is rap music more of a bad influence than Celebrities that do drugs, cheat on their spouces, steal, lie, rape and murder?

Umm its not? Celebrities that do drugs/cheat/steal/lie etc are a bad influence. And guess what lots of those celebrities are gangsta rappers! [QUOTE="DarkGamer007"] How is rap music more of a bad influence than Politicians that start wars, oppress the rights of people, lie, cheat the system, and are curropted?

Easily influenced young people generally aren't following politics very closely, and if they were do you really think they'd get excited about "starting wars" and "cheating the system"? I don't know what world you're living in that you think there is a ton of young people looking up to corrupt politicians and/or dictators. This list of bullet points keeps getting stupider the further I go along. I did not realize this was only about how it influences young people. I always tend to focus more on the 18 to 35 crowd because that is where I fall in line.

I'd rather listen to Danny Brown's misogynist lyrics or Roc Marciano's mafioso raps about dumping bodies in the Hudson River than some unskilled cookie cutter Flobots rap. I care about great writing and the craft of songmaking. If it happens to be violent or misogynist subject matter so be it.

And it's not as if this stuff is plaguing mainstream hip-hop anyways. Aren't a lot of the most popular rappers out nowadays soft like a Twinkie filling?

Yea, I realize that now and still disagree with your views on this matter. I do like Chamillionaire though, especially his mixtapes and early stuff with Swishahouse.

Most mainstream music, genre ignored, sucks and much of it also has no/bad messages.

No need to try and villianize hip-hop..

I know people like to use the argument that rappers' lyrics are much more influential on young people than fictional movies or video games. But the movie Scarface has inspired more drug dealers than any rap song. Here are some quotes by Azie Faison, one of the biggest drug kingpins in Harlem back in the late 80's.

"The character Tony Montana went from poor to mad rich by selling coke. He made tons of young cats want to sell cocaine too, including me."

"After watching Scarface, I wanted to be the Tony Montana of Harlem. I easily made more than $40000 a week, and became a millionaire before reaching voting age. I was on a paper chase."

quotes courtesy of Azie Faison's autobiography Game Over

most mainstream music sucks. pop, rock, hip hop, rap. no reason to call out one over the other. what bothers me is that some people that start these threads have cannibal corpse or some death metal band in their sig. the irony is just too much to handle

most mainstream music sucks. pop, rock, hip hop, rap. no reason to call out one over the other. what bothers me is that some people that start these threads have cannibal corpse or some death metal band in their sig. the irony is just too much to handle

it doesn't suck, your ears are just not attuned to it.

Any type of mainstream music sucks. There's plenty of good hip hop out there even if it is violent or depicts women as sexual objects lol.

[QUOTE="Marth6781"] So basically you don't have an idea what you're talking about. Stop hating on hip hop

Stop trying to insert yourself completely into the middle of conversations and then getting angry when you're confused. I am not hating on hip-hop, I'm talking specifically about musicians and music that propagate the Alpha male caricature who expoused violence and misogyny.

Lol at hearing music but not actually not listening to it. 50 cent is a whore, my 10 year old brother writes better songs than that mug. This is real talent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEOKgjoxoto
