A lot of people fake mental illness since, ya know, it's pretty easy to do and an easy way to get attention. People are always wary of those that say "Oh yeah I'm depressed" or "I have mental problems that make me not get on well with others" because a lot of the times these are people who are just loners that refuse to communicate to other people and there's actually nothing wrong with them they've just self diagnosed it as a way to make other people feel bad for them.bobbetybobIf they're loners, they don't want other people to feel bad for them, because that could lead to more people trying to be around them. In reality, not many people actually fake a disibility. I had to put up with some people in high school saying I was making it all up, when I didn't make any of it up and that's the least of what they did. I have Asperger's, too.

Yeah, my friend who's mom died of cancer in front of his eyes when he was 12 has got nothing on people with Asperger's.
Some people find it funny, others don't. Get over it. Speaking of Aspergers. 98% of people that say they have it, don't. I'm not saying that's the case with you OP, because I don't know you, but just putting that out there. That can lead to a lot of people making fun of people with disabilities. As for special treatment. Well, I don't think they deserve any special treatment. They can learn to behave like a perfectly normal human being as best they can or they can be kept in institutions.

As for making fun of this and making fun of that. Most people don't mean anything by it. You make it sound like everyone has nothing else better to do than torment others.
Some people are too sensitive. Emos. They dig their very own emotional dramas. Nobody cares. Some people have diabetes, so what, nobody really cares.
ROFLCOPTER603
I lol'd at this. It's true, no one really does care.
 Yeah, nobody cares about diabetes and they don't care enough to notice I've been talking about diabetes, not disabilities in general.AND we say diabetis because that's how Brimley says it. "Die-A-beet-iss."
TC you edited your first post 11 times, as of my posting this; that's effing hilarious.
The mentally disabled are a tricky lot, far too emotionally unstable to pick on for my taste.
But you seem to miss the point, "making fun" is tantamount of an insult and it wouldn't be funny if it were not disparaging. You claim not to have taken it personally yet that remark provoked you. that's kinda funny. seeing as the author making light of your aspergers managed to get the appropriate response.
But you're really not helping your cause, saying those with a lacking of a proper education lack qualities that make a person whole, you're saying they lack empathy. "...all the time at my college but I feel that kind of thinking is maybe a product of the uneducated." How can someone be in an institution for higher learning and still be uneducated? Honestly, it feels hard to take you seriously.
i have no respect for people who hold the percieved right to not be offended. if im going to joke about one thing. ill joke about anything. everyone has disabilities of some sort, if you cant laugh than you have bigger things to worry about than your disability

I have no respect for people who feign the inability to get offended, while using that as ammunition for saying whatever they feel like.
I guarantee that ANYONE throwing around the "they're stupid for getting offended" card gets offended by lots of other stuff.
Funnily enough, those kinds of people are often seen to have very thin skins, as they are noted for being offended by the fact that other people have the capacity to get offended. Yeah...one guy's getting offended because of insults about conditions that are beyond his control. While the people who are telling him to STFU are basically getting offended about the fact that other people have feelings.
Yeah, SOMEONE is being a whiny crybaby in that situation. I'm not gonna say who, though, because that person is certainly going to rat me out for offending him.
[QUOTE="Nude_Dude"]Don't we basically do it every time we call someone dumb?Sunfyre7896
Not unless the person is trully retarded, mentally disabled if you will. If someone has a measured IQ of 80, 90, whatever, or if they are acting stupid, then it's not making fun of a disabled person, just a dumb person.
As for making fun of actual disabilities, people that do that ought to get b**** slapped a few times to wake up.
Dumb actually refers to people who are mute. Mentally retarded isn't the origin of the word.
Definition.
This pretty much clarifies my thoughts from my earlier post in a more succinct manner. As a fan of humor and comedy, I feel there should be absolutely no bounds when it comes to subject matter.
Blatant mocking and/or ignorance is just annoying though.

I 'poke fun' at everyone. If I let disabled people 'off the hook', that would mean I was guilty of discrimination.
...now what kind of person would that make me?
I ask this because a GameFAQ member (surprise, surprise) made light of my Asperger's. Starshine_M2A2
If we are being perfectly honest ITT, I do that all the time on the other site I go to (as we have quite a few kids that suffer from that).
I think I am just doing my part to 'toughen them up'. In fact, Stever (who used to post here) is my greatest success story and the model I use for all others.
But I am well aware of the fact that such acts are not allowed here and alter my posting styIe accordingly
Like jokes about women, foreigners, ugly people and OAPs, I consider jokes about disabled people be fair game. A joke's a joke, so long as it's reasonably funny, I don't require any political correctness amongst it.
However I don't agree at all with mocking someone because they're disabled, or old or ugly or are a different culture or whatever, I only believe in mocking people who are stupid.
