Sorry if this is slightly on-topic, but I just got into a sligh arguement with my kinship (guild) in LOTRO, whether it's ok for a male to play on a female character. It was a joking, light-hearted arguement, but an arguement nontheless, since I wanted to make a female lore-master (healer) after I was bored with my Champion.

Now, my kin was against it, and asked me not to create a female char, and I felt obligated to abandon the idea, and that was a big let-down. It's not like I have cross-dressing urges, feel the need to seduce men, or desire to wack off to my own char while watching her ride a horse, or anything, but I'm into roleplaying and style, so I felt that it was appropriate to make my healer a gentle-looking, female elf. It'd be pretty and pleasant, you know?

So I figured I'd ask GS: what do you think about this?

I've done that in RPG's before, but that's mostly because the ones I play usually have archetypes per character, and it seems that the girls usually have kickass magic. Me being more of a magic guy...

Meh,I usually play a male, being one myself. Though I have no problem when a male plays a female,it's a game after all.

Edit: On a side note,Why the hell are the polls still broken? It's been,what,5 days?

I do it in RPG's often. As for MMO-rpg's ... hm, nah, I prefer to look the gender I am in those. I find it fine tho, most women play as guys just to hide from horny nerds :P . That's fine as well.

I hate that **** in MMO's. I play Ragnarok Online and my guild leader was a girl (or so we thought) because his char was a girl. But when he told everyone he was a girl it was kind of awkward.

Now cause of that people don't believe me that I'm really a female playing Ragnarok Online. Apparently it's a 'myth'. sigh.

It was a bit awkward to find my (male) friend playing Mass Effect as a girl and getting involved with Kaidan on his first playthrough... but to each his own I guess.

Of course, that should just be a natural assumption,if you see a female character in any mmo its probably 90% likely it's a he.

I see nothing wrong with it, I too have played as female characters so I can fully beat a game like KOTOR where the story will change and character options will change.

LOL, yeah, I agree that secretly being a guy while playing a female is kinda weird, but if your leader told you guys right away, wouldn't things be less awkward?

I'll play as a guy, pretty much always. But it doesnt really mean anything either. Plus I've seen a girl change her name b/c to a male one b/c nerds were harassing her.

I always choose male characters in MMOs,except in Pokemon, where I occasionally choose the female character for the heck of it.I've seen guys using girls on Maple Story, putting on an "innocent" demeanor to get money from others :P

I have a WoW playing friend that only plays girls because "if you're going to spend hundreds of hours looking at the back of your character, it might as well look good" That's when it gets weird

LOL True. But we only have 3 dances in LOTRO, and all of them last for 2 seconds and then have your character start claping and tapping his or her foot =\. Not very exciting.

My main character when I used to play WoW was a girl. It was pretty cool. Why? I liked the armor better, and I didn't like any of the guy characters I made. Also, I wanted to be a mahou shoujo. :P

Champions, and that's what I have now. But I was so impressed with the usefulness and awsomeness of healers when I went on a few instances, that I decided that my next char would definately be a female healer. It was just really awsome.

Upon looking up the classes of LOTRO, I am now convinced that you should be a female guardian. Wikipedia describes them as "tanks". Female tanks are sexy.

Yea I use to play WoW and every time I made a new character that had healing powers, like a druid or a priest, I would make it a female. Actually the majority of healers in WoW were female and the mojority of warriors in WoW were male. Kinda weird huh.

This thread is ancient, but I just have to say this: your kinship's hang-up on make-believe genitalia is really creepy. What do they do, demand you confirm your gender on Ventrilo so they can make sure that everyone plays with the right virtual plumbing installed?

Honest, this kind of thing always makes me think the "you must be your correct gender" -people who are cruising for dates/cybersex and whacking off to other people's avatars. If you're not, in a virtual world there's just no reason to care.

That guy is a moron. Most people I know don't care if a guy makes a female character. As long as you aren't pretending you're a real girl and trying to get a with a guy most of them wont care. Majority of the famel characters in WoW are actualy men, and the thing is when the game first came out there were a ton of males characters running around.. few years later you see more females on some realms because rerolls wanted something new.

The whole point of video gaming is to escape reality. MMO's moreso than any other genre. What's the difference between pretending a male night elf, troll, or dwarf and pretending to be a female human, orc or something else? It's all make believe!

I had a couple of females characters. For the sole reason that if you pretend to be a chick you can wind up with some good loot. Never understood why that is but hey, it worked.

Look when I play a game, I don't wanna stare at a mans butt for the entire time.

Secondly, men get odd and give you free stuff if you just pretend to be a female.

i pick females because theyre generally more visually appealing. And no, as a guy myself, I dont roleplay as a woman so there aint no creepiness. Though is some jackass wants to give me one gold for my draenei priest to dance naked, hey thats fine by me.

what am I supposed to do? make a sexy looking guy?

It's fine as long as you don't pretend to be someone else e.g telling people you're a middle aged single mum :)

I know it's not an MMO but I play as a boy sometimes in Pokemon for a change and my bf always creates a girl character on games where you have the choice. It's boring playing as the same gender your whole life (as long as you keep it in games!)

There's only one problem with playing a female character if you are a guy. Too many people will try to hit on you thinking you are a hot babe. ITs funny playing a female character if you are a male since you might get free stuff in the process >=D

so everyone in wow should play as a human, unless of course you are an elf or orc in real life.
