People laugh at death all the time. How many jokes can you think of that deal with someone dying? How many cartoons are there that make humorous situations out of death or practical death? It's not that death isn't funny, it almost universally is a basis for humor, it's just that in this case we're talking about actual people who died under humorous circumstances. Tragic, yes, and I wouldn't make light of it in front of their family, but it still holds some humorous value.
