A man who choked to death at a Voodoo Doughnuts shop in Denver was reportedly trying to wolf down a giant doughnut during a food-eating challenge.

Travis Malouff, 42, died Sunday while attempting to down a half-pound glazed doughnut. The cause of death was "asphyxia, due to obstruction of the airway," the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner said Monday morning.

Malouff was taking the shop's "Tex-Ass Challenge," which requires participants to consume the colossal doughnut — the equivalent of six regular doughnuts — within an 80-second time limit. Winners get a free meal and a button.

Well, I guess they won't be running that challenge any more.

@loco145:

Only in America? I'd certainly guess so!

I wonder how they come up with eighty seconds as a time limit?

Yeah, these kinds of things are for people who have death wishes, or said "I could eat a horse" too many times and believed it literally.

In 80 seconds? Be careful not to overestimate your own capabilities, is all I'm saying.

@madrocketeer:

Eighty seconds is such an odd ball time span that I would have to try it and see, but that seems like it would be long enough. Not that "take our donut challenge that just killed a guy" is really attractive.

Dunno about that. I'm sure "The Death Donut Challenge: do you dare risk your life for fame and free meals?" would have plenty of takers. Just look at how many people eat Fugu (puffer fish) every year just for the danger of it. Some people even go out of their ways to ask specifically for the liver, where all the tetrodotoxin is, just to see if they can survive it.

Humans are weird like that.

These restaurants need to make it known (as a selling point) how these challenges are so tough that death is a possible outcome. That will get even more people taking these challenges.

I'm not personally motivated by potentially fatal foods, but in general you are undoubtedly right.

That's unfortunate. I'm sure they tried seeing how long it took to eat the themselves and came to the conclusion that an 80 second time limit was an appropriate challenge. Anyway I doubt they'll be doing this again at least anytime soon.

I'll never understand food eating contests, and especially when these small businesses do the whole "eat this large ass meal under an obscenely limited amount of time and then it's free."

1. I don't want to clog my arteries.

2. I want to enjoy my food.

3. The price tag for such meal is probably not even remotely expensive enough to deem it worthy to not even enjoy it just to get it for free.

What do people win out of these? A napkin on the wall with their names signed on them?

That's rough, and tragic.

A donut is a terrible food item to do this with. The texture of the food is way easy to get stuck in the throat, and the dough is dense enough that it won't slide down easily.

This reminds me of those idiots doing the 'Cinnamon Challenge' a few years back. That was a much worse thing than this, but I don't remember if anyone actually died from that or not.

Must be the angle/distance but that donut doesn't look that big!

And yes, that's what she said.

Cake like things can easily get stuck and kill you if you eat huge quantities all at once.

Is it not just too much common sense to have someone nearby trained for the heimlich maneuver at all eating contests? I mean c'mon now.

Here's a few thing I said at someone's funeral:

  1. By the power of Greyskull...
  2. Good riddance! More Spaghettios for me.
  3. Made you look!
  4. Stand back - I know CPR!
  5. Down in front!

Yeah... most of these didn't end down well.
