http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110621/ts_yblog_thelookout/man-robs-bank-to-get-medical-care-in-jail

Some people who need medical care but can't afford it go to the emergency room. Others just hope they'll get better. James Richard Verone robbed a bank.

Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up.

He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week.

Verone's problems started when he lost the job he'd held for 17 years as a Coca Cola deliveryman, amid the economic downturn. He found new work driving a truck, but it didn't last. Eventually, he took a part-time position at the convenience store.

But Verone's body wasn't up to it. The bending and lifting made his back ache. He had problems with his left foot, making him limp. He also suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.

Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. "The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," Verone told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything."

Verone knew he needed help--and he didn't want to be a burden on his sister and brothers. He applied for food stamps, but they weren't enough either.

So he hatched a plan. On June 9, he woke up, showered, ironed his shirt. He mailed a letter to the Gazette, listing the return address as the Gaston County Jail.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me," Verone wrote in the letter. "This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

Then Verone hailed a cab to take him to the RBC Bank. Inside, he handed the teller his $1 robbery demand.

"I didn't have any fears," said Verone. "I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police."

The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. Verone, meanwhile, was taken to jail, just as he'd planned it.

Because he only asked for $1, Verone was charged with larceny, not bank robbery. But he said that if his punishment isn't severe enough, he plans to tell the judge that he'll do it again. His $100,000 bond has been reduced to $2,000, but he says he doesn't plan to pay it.

In jail, Verone said he skips dinner to avoid too much contact with the other inmates. He's already seen some nurses and is scheduled to see a doctor on Friday. He said he's hoping to receive back and foot surgery, and get the protrusion on his chest treated. Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach.

Verone also presented the view that if the United States had a health-care system which offered people more government support, he wouldn't have had to make the choice he did.

"If you don't have your health you don't have anything," Verone said.

The Affordable Care Act, President Obama's health-care overhaul passed by Congress last year, was designed to make it easier for Americans in situations like Verone's to get health insurance. But most of its provisions don't go into effect until 2014.

As it is, Verone said he thinks he chose the best of a bunch of bad options. "I picked jail."

It's sad when people have to go to jail or go to the emergency room knowing they're not going to pay because of a horrible economy and one of the worst health care systems in the first class world. Even emergency rooms are notoriously bad with doctors overworked, not caring, and rushed care that many times doesn't solve the problem wholly. I don't have insurance because I can't afford $300 a month just so I can have a $1000 deductible which I would never touch unless I go to the hospital, not from standard doctor's visits. Therefore, I don't ever go to the doctor which I should do. Thank God I'm young. When I get to this man's age, I guess I'm effed just like a goog proportion of this country. Way to go Washington.

That is the funniest part of a sad story. He sure seems to have thought this all out. I hope he lives long enough to enjoy his beach life.

Obviously nothing, since he's so desperate as to rob a bank just for the healthcare he'll get in jail.

before we go on the we need universal health care has anyone stopped to consider our crushing debt? has anyone stopped to consider how to pay for it(no a bill that is miles long does not begin to count unless youve read every detail of it). but no lets just put 300 million folks on a healthcare plan and pay for it with the money the tooth fairy gives us. really folks. really? im all for affordable medicine but universal health care is not quite the answer and even if it was we lack the funds to cover it. of course other countries have universal healthcare and they have their own horror stories of how bad it is over there but i guess lets just ignore those stories cause clearly they are liars. that said this is sad but not the first time ive heard of it

exactly this obamacare is WORSE than what we currently have. and what we currently have still gives us the best in the world for the time being. and insurance companies barely make a profit i think its like a 4% profit generally. so i dont think they are being pandered too. of course the amount of BS claims they get is likely staggering i'd be suspicious if i was them too. of course the entire concept of insurance is a bit whacky. pay large sums of money when someone gets screwed over by life. the ultimate flaw is of course when mother nature wrecks a city and we see insurance companies cant afford to pay for everything at once. so all reality if people keep getting sicker and sicker insurance companies really cant afford to cover it and neither can the government.

Actually if you look at costs, you'll realize that the US has the most costly system as well as the worst in the western world for the average person. Canadians spend less than half of what we do yet get better coverage, the British spend even less than that. Of course socialization of health insurance, as in Canada's case, or of the entire system, as in the UK, is not the only answer. The French and Germans have a public-private mixture and get more coverage with better results than the Canadians do while still spending far less than we do. Point being, if you want to save money then switch over to literally any other healthcare system used in the western world. The swiss have a totally private system for instance yet they get universal coverage while spending far less than what we do; the affordable care act somewhat follows this route.

Sssh! [whispering] Don't say that too loud. The people that make a lot of money or the ones that stand up for capitalism at all costs because anything else would be "Socialist -or- Fascist" might hear you. I mean, why would we want to help take care of the less fortunate when we could just let them rot and die on the streets and blame them for not making at least $60,000 or be lucky enough to work at a company with good insurance. How dare them?

:| the poverty line for the USA is around 10%. Anyone in the bottom 10% of earners is in poverty. It doesn't matter if they make $1 a year, or $400,000 a year, if they're in the bottom 10% they're defined as being in poverty. It's a bit ridiculous, and it makes it awful hard to fight poverty.

I think there are two real problems that the economy has today.

The first one is that the government needs to stop granting so many tax breaks. Families with children should be the only people who get tax breaks. Taxes should be more progressive.

The second problem is something which isn't closely monitored. I belive it has more of an effect than any prediction, or stock market, or any other indicator of the economy. I don't remember the dictionary name of it, but it has to do with employees and their superiors. In 1910, the highest person in a company earned 40x that of the lowest worker. Just a few years later, in 1928 the highest person earned an average of 450x of that of the lowest worker. See that difference? Same is happening now. In 1993, the highest person was earning an average of 50x that of the lowest person. Now that problem is greater, now the average is like some 430x.

Note: some of my numbers may be off a little bit, but the scale is pretty close.

The whole point of capitalism is that some people make a ton more than others.
