http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41963513/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts

"The father of a five-year-old boy slain in 1975 has vowed to murder the man who did it "as aggressively and painfully as he killed my son" if he is released from prison early.

John Foreman told WPRO-AM radio that he blamed himself for accepting a plea deal that saw Michael Woodmansee convicted of the second-degree murder of his son Jason in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.

Woodmansee was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 1982, but the plea bargain deal allowed him to be released early for good behavior. This could happen as soon as August, the Providence Journal reported.

In the interview, Foreman claimed a journal kept by Woodmansee, which has not been released by police, details how the killer had eaten the young boy's flesh.

"I do intend, if this man is released anywhere in my vicinity, or if I can find him after the fact, I do intend to kill this man," Foreman added.

"I cannot think, I cannot sleep. All I think about is trying to find a way to get this man to kill him," he told WPRO-AM.

Foreman said he wanted to kill Woodmansee "as aggressively and painfully as he killed my son."

He said he remembered only one detail contained in the journal, that Woodmansee "ate the flesh of my son.""MSNBC

Rest of the article in the link.

Anyways, what does OT think about this?

Do you support what this man says? Does the brutality of the murder or the age of the child affect your moral stance on vigilante justice at all?

Personally, I can sympathize, I just hope he's ready to deal with the consequences if he succeeds, I'm sure he has had plenty of time to think of this however.

I'm a believer in vengence, so I support this man going after the murderer of his son. That being said, he deserves to be punished by the law if he does follow through on this. You have to accept the consequences for your actions, both the murderer and the father.

I support the father 100%.

I have no problem with him doing what the state should have done years ago.

Murderers deserve nothing LESS than death.

If he wasn't looking for justice, then he wouldn't strive to kill this man... but invest all his time, energy and money in protecting the public from him, and attempting to prove that he is unsafe to be on the streets.

Killing the murderer IS justice. Vengeance IS justified.

Netherscourge

No it isn't. Killing a murderer makes one a murderer. No life, no matter how "sick" or "twisted" they might be, deserves death at the hands of another human being. I've always quoted Rachel Dawes from Batman Begins on this matter:

Bruce Wayne:What if I do Rachel? My parents deserved justice.
Rachel Dawes:You're not talking about justice. You're talking about revenge.
Bruce Wayne:Sometimes they're the same.
Rachel Dawes:No, they're never the same. Justice is about harmony. Revenge is about you making yourself feel better, which is why we have an impartial system.

People looking for "justice" would be willing to forgive the attacker, and want them to understand why they are wrong, and help them become productive members of society again (or give them treatment for their illness). We are no longer living in an age of ignorance where taking the easy way out is the solution. We have the ability to find out why people do these things, and I am almost certain that ALL violent criminals (other than those who commit crimes of passion) suffer from mental illness that with enough time and research, will be treatable.

What this man is trying to do is relieve a pain that can never go away. He is just propagating more violence in response to violence. He needs to come to terms with his loss, and try his damnedest to keep the rest of society safe from this man who killed his son. Justice is preserving the harmony of society through impartiality, not indulging one's emotions for the sake of relief from grief.

If we are talking in terms of religious guidelines, agreed muurder is not justice. But in terms of logical punishment. You get what you give out, and I'm not complaining if the scumbag gets what he gave right back. And if that only makes the father feel better, then it is justified.

I honestly don't know. I don'tlike the idea of people taking justice into their own hands. I know the right thing to do would be to support the rule of law and condemn this man for such a statement. But, if that were my son that was murdered, I would have a hard time not wanting to go after the murderer, too.

The fact he ate the child's flesh is proof enough he is mentally ill. And "get what you give out" is so Old Testament. Even the Jews themselves said that "an eye for an eye" wasn't justified if the person who had to compensate the victim didn't have eyes to give, and a monetary reconciliation was far more beneficial for the victims and the community.

Justice is keeping the community safe and the reconciliation for victims... not dolling out violent punishments.

Considering he ate parts of a 5 year old child and is being let out, I support the guy who's son was murdered but I think it'd be a better idea to find a way to get him sent back to jail instead, considering he had the killers journal that wasn't given to police.

The murderer obviously has some sort of mental problem or was on some serious PHP in order to eat a child, a person like that shouldn't be let out of prison so soon, even if he had "good behavior".

Nope. Still just the illusion of justice clouded by intense emotion. Justice is something that cannot be brought about by anything besides complete impartiality.

Depends
The two are neither mutually inclusive or exclusive.

Vengeance is something personal. It may or may not fall in line with societal beliefs concerning justice

I agree. If I had a son who was murdered, I would probably want to butcher the killer as well.

I'd probably be thrown out of the jury pool, since I would refuse to convict him.

Why is someone who killed and ate the flesh of a 5 year old going to be released? Good behavior? This is insane. I support the father or anyone else who stops this loon from being in public. Some things can be forgiven and forgotten, but this is not one of them.

I can understand the father's feelings (although I hope he understands that killing this man won't give him what he seeks), but I will not condone anyone taking the law into their own hands. If you think the system is broken then fix it.
