Hi guys. So after I received the news of Sony being really bad, I went to a market stocks website, and I'm kind of liking it. I'm seeing a lot of companies that aren't as good as I was thinking and vice-versa. However the website I use has major malfunctions, so if you could provide me another it would be super.

And you guys? Do you also like to check on the economy once and then?

Although they are at the end of the day linked, there is really not as much correlation between financial markets and the micro/macro economies as you might think.

As for good, free websites that provide a macro picture of the financial markets and economy, try google.com/finance and finance.yahoo.com

Really? I wasn't aware that Sony was in the crapper. I need to get my head on straight.

They've had a loss the last 3 fiscal years. They are not insolvent or anything though. At least not yet.

Google Finance for me, if only because it's what I'm more used to. Though I do use both, along with many others.

They're both very good, thank you guys. Now I'll ask you a bigger thing. I don't really know how to see the status of the companies, I mean I can see if their good or bad, but I want to learn to analyse the situations with more depth. So if anyone could teach me a few basics, I would be thrilled. I never had economics in my life, I'm a humanities student.

Google is really the only site you need until you actually start investing. Then you can use the tools given to you when you open an account to start trading. I like Scottrade.

the study of economics might help you find growth industries or future trends, but it wont help you pick good companies, for that you would need accounting/finance background and you would need several sets of financials to compare and contrast, then you would be able to come up with industry averages and norms for metrics of your choosing, you should also read up on the important disclosures that come with the financial. whatever you end up doing there will be a risk and you take full liability of whatever you invest. you may lose it all in an instant.
