Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

This news headline is probably one of the most irresponsible headline that I've seen in years. It's going to hit with the force of 100 million hydrogen bombs! Oh no, we're all doomed! Oh, wait, solar storms only cause electrical disturbances? Oh.

I mean yeah, sure, it's a cause for alarm and it sounds like it could potentially cause a lot of damage, but the article also says it could require four to ten years for a complete recovery. I'm fairly sure that a worldwide apocalypse would require a bit more than four to ten years for a complete recovery. And that estimate sounds like the worst case scenario, too.

No electricty, no prison security....

No one wants the world to end, but if the solar storm is as big as they say, it'll set mankind back at least 10 years. People better start learning how to garden and survive outdoors. We have modern things that don't use electricity that would help us survive (sunglasses will help our tolerance against the sunlight, our houses can provide shelter as long you can defend it, etc) Image the show "The Colony" only on a much larger scale. Money will be useless and we'll go back to bartering food and trade supplies like linens and precious metals (keep your old phones and cameras, since they contain valuable metals like gold, silver and copper). Natural springs, rivers, lakes and wells will be our sources of water. Horses will be extremely valuable, as means of transportation. Get some guns and ammo and provisionsbecause the rioting will last for the first couple months at least. :P

Has been predicted for a while, it's the only bit of the 2012 apocalypse that has any credible evidence. Though it seems like it'll be satellites which will have the most trouble, the atmosphere and magnetic fields should see off the majority of it.markop2003
