Matt Smith leaving Doctor Who

Oh god, it has been so long since I made a topic on this board.

Anyway, it appears that Matt Smith, who has portrayed The Doctor on the show Doctor Who for the past 3 series, is  stepping down after the Chrismas special . 

I personally feel a mix of sadness and excitement. I hate to see him go, but at the same time a new Doctor is always exciting.

Thoughts? 

I was under the impression he had already signed on for another season, so I was caught off guard by it.  Quite sad to see him go as he's my favorite version of the character.  Still, I'm looking forward to see who is taking on the roll next. 

Unless the writers fix the lore, the next doctor will be the last regeneration. That's kind of depressing.

I really don't understand why people obsess over that.  It was one line dropped in the show during the 1970s or 1980s.  I assure you, the BBC won't let go of a property that lucrative over something so minor.

If I recall correctly, wasn't Matt Smith their second choice, with the first actually being a black actor whose schedule ultimately didn't allow for him to play the role?  That could've just been a rumor, however.  I wouldn't mind a black actor taking on the character.  I'm sure there will be a ridiculous backlash, though. 

I stopped watching when David Tennant left(for various reasons) and even though I didn' t even watch a single episode with Matt Smith, I never really liked him. For me Tennant is the best doctor.

Don't get me wrong though, i love mat smith, i just hate where the show has been going recently.

Would LOVE, LOVE to see a different portrayal of the Doctor, perhaps a Black Woman, Naomi Harris? but yeah, the EDL and BNP would march on Downing street, LOL

Didn't mind Matt Smith but im fine with him leaving he has been on for a few years now and I blame Steven Moffat for Splitting the Seasons Up, hell I blame him for how bad the show has been the last few seasons. Im hoping perhaps the next Doctor or the *Ninth* Doctor really kicks the show back to what it was.

WTF I thought he signed up for season 8. Oh my, this is a shock.

I only watched it when he was doing it. The other two weren't up to par. Of course I haven't seen any of the old episodes to judge the older actors.

Sad, since I've enjoyed Matt Smith as the Doctor. I'm always excited to see who the next Doctor will be, and we have the explanation of how the John Hurt Doctor fits into everything.

I think the 3-4 years for an actor's tenure as the Doctor is the right amount.

I'm sure that if we do get to the 13th Doctor, and the show is still popular, there will be a way to get around the end of his regenerations.

I'm mostly glad. Last episode with the nth Doctor episodes are always pretty good, and I'm sure the new guy will be good, too.

Matt Smith has always reminded me more of some of the old Doctors, specifically the Second and Fourth. A little more serious with a slight playful side. Tennant was much more about the fun with some crazy mood swings added in.

I always liked Matt Smith's portrayl of the Doctor. Like it's been mentioned already by someone else, he reminded me a lot of some of the older Doctors, and I thought he brought his own charm to the show. I'll admit the series has gone downhill and the writing isn't as good for a while, but that's not an actors doing at the end of the day. Matt worked with what he had and in my opinion brought his role to life, so of course I'm going to miss seeing him on my tv screen after he leaves. 

Needless to say, I am looking forward to a new Doctor. It's always exciting to see who they find. I don't think I want a well known actor to play him, since it's nice to see someone new.

Maybe not of note in the US, but tennant is doing theater work with Patrick Stewart in London. That's really big here.
