I'm trying to get into metal. it seems like it has a lot of energy and is very fast and fun to listen to. but, having spent the majority of my life listening to hip hop/rap, i am oblivious to any good metal songs. i know there are a lot of metal heads out there, so i was hoping you guys could help me out. i'll try anything, but preferably some older songs, you know, with the crazy album covers and stuff. none of that brutal newer stuff though.

Pelican, Isis, Agalloch (currently listening to), Intronaut, Callisto, Red Sparowes, and Russian Circles are some of my favourites. if you want something faster and heavier, i would say thrash or even melodic death metal. or the tradition nu-metal foundation, since youre into hip-hop.

The best place to start is in a video game, actually. In GTA Vice City, there's a radio station called V-Rock. It's got all you need to get started in metal - all the best heavy and thrash metal hits from the glory days of metal - late 80s-early 90s. It's just awesome. It's what got me into metal more then 6 years ago, and it hasn't let g0 since.

If you don't have GTA Vice City, I'm sure you can find the rip of the station somewhere. I can even send you one.

Well, Judas Priest are a golden oldy. If brutal's not your thing just shy away death/black metal and some of the more extreme thrash metal while you get into metal, it'll grow on your eventually. ManowarIron Maiden Like what you hear, just look into more songs from that album/band.

Start with older mainstream (Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica), then newer mainstream (Melodic Metalcore, like Shadows Fall and Unearth). Then, go with bands like Dream Theater and Opeth. From there, keep digging deeper for more obscure artists.

It made me smile inside to see such a lost soul convert to Metal. Welcome to the Dark Side, brother! You should find at least something you like out of these.

Classic Metal - try Metallica's Master of Puppets.

Progressive Metal - Savatage's Hall of the Mountain King.

Power Metal - Hammerfall's Dreamland or Any Means Necessary.

Symphonic Metal - Nightwish's Dark Chest of Wonders or Planet Hell.

Symphonic Power Metal - Rhapsody's Emerald Sword or Kamelot's Forever.

¢lassic Progressive Power Metal - Angra's Carry On.

(It's censoring ¢lassic for some reason...) The only song you really only have to listen to more than 30 seconds of is Planet Hell, because it gets Metal after the intro. Be sure to listen to all of Carry On, though, because it's pretty diverse, and my favorite of all of these.

i think Lake Bodom would be a better suggestion. besides it being an amazing song, it was the song that originally introduced me to that band and got my listening to them.

Start with Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motorhead and Iron Maiden, ya know...the roots of metal. Other heavy metal bands like Savatage, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Diamond Head and Saxon are good too.

Then when you wanna rock a bit harder, move on to thrash. Start with Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus and Testament, then move onto some Slayer after giving those guys a listen, then move on to real thrash metal like kreator, sodom and destruction.

After that, if you wanna go farther, hit up melodic death metal and folk metal like in flames, amon amarth, black dahlia murder, equillibrium, dark tranquility, children of bodom, kalmah wintersun and ensiferum.

If you still wanna progress down the road, black metal and death metal are the way to go (my two favorite metal genres) and you shall listen to Wolves in the Throne Room, Marduk, Gorgoroth, Immortal, Mayhem, Nile, Bolt Thrower, Immolation, Atheist, Behemoth, Death, Rotting Christ and Suffocation

Also throw in Nevermore, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains and NIN (I know NIN and Alice in Chains aren't metal, but enough metalheads like them and they are still awesome) because all those bands rule.

Welcome to the world of heavy metal, please enjoy your stay...just stay away from metalcore! :P

Because 9/10 Nu-Metal bands are hated here...For me Disturbed and Slipknot are two exceptions.
