I'll second Slayer, Death, the Misfits and Sleep, even though the Misfits aren't metal.

There are a lot of genres that fall into this category, but I'll leave you with a few that I have been into frequently-

Possuido Pelo Cao (brazilian thrash)

No Mercy (no, not the awful new age techno band, this was one of Mike Muir's bands outside of ST)

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles (aka D.R.I.)

Gang Green

and lastly, but definitely a MUST;

Sepultura

All of these bands are on Myspace. Give them a listen.

It isnt metal if they dont scream...

Trivium

Bullet for my Valentine

In Flames

Testament

Soilwork

Atreyu

Killswitch Engage

MachineHead

etc

Don't be saying what is metal and what isn't then posting a list of barely any metal:| The Lord Weird Slough Feg. Everyone should listen to them.

Most of what he said is Metalcore. Whether you want to admit it or not, Metalcore is a subgenre of... Guess what; Metal!

No way! Its's a subgenre of -core!

Van Halen was one of the bands to originate it, and are sometimes refered to as "glam" but didnt go too far into it. so therefore wasnt "Hair metal" you saying W.A.S.P, Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, Stryper, Nitro arent metal??

I'm surprised no one recommended Jag Panzer (especially "Thane to the Throne" and "Casting the Stones").

OverKill: "The Years of Decay" or "Taking Over."

Anthrax: "Persistence of Time," "Spreading the Disease," "Among the Living."

Iced Earth: "Days of Purgatory," "Something Wicked pt 1 and 2."

Gamma Ray: "Land of the Free" (1 and 2), "Insanity and Genius."

Megadeth: "Rust in Peace," "Peace Sells..." and "The World Needs a Hero."

Hallow's Eve (the old stuff on "Tales of Terror," and not the latest one).

Judas Priest: "Defenders of the Faith."

Iron Maiden: "Number of the Beast," "Powerslave," "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son," "Fear of the Dark," "Brave New World," "A Matter of Life And Death."

...that's all I can think of... too many really good bands in my collection fit your criteria.

Those are good ones too. I like the drummer on my picks better, though. ;)

Dream Theater are good but I can't imagine them doing Master of Puppets. It's not their style.

Dio, Iron Maiden, HammerFall, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Stratovarius, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Therion, Epica, Dream Theater, Nevernore, Opeth, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Overkill, Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Bonded By Blood, Exodus, Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Cynic, High On Fire, 3 Inches of Blood, Ayreon, Iced Earth, Demons and Wizards, Rhapsody, Dark Moor. i highly suggest giving the more extreme Metal with harsh vocals a try, it greatly increases the number of amazing bands you could get into, i'll give you a few good starters; Ensiferum, Wintersun, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Dark Tranquillity, Dimmu Borgir
