Which do you think is better?

As bad as pop canbe at times, the majority of metal I've heard pretty much has no sense of songcraft whereas there's actually alot of very good pop songwriting from the past.
I also think pop has more variety. Pop runs the gamut from stuff like Michael Jackson to stuff like Outkast. Most metal I've heard sounds samey. Same sort of textures, same sort of atmospheres, samey vocals inflections, etc.

There's variety in pop.
The song "Hey Ya" by Outkast and "Like A Virgin" by Madonnaare both pop songs. They sound nothing the same.

Woah....those are not the same artists.:PHard to call for me. Both genres have some awful acts, and both have great groups. A few years back I'd probably of said Metal, but nowadays my tastes are more varied - I've got jazz, blues, metal, pop and some hip hop on my Mp3 :D .

They both will get stuck in your head for at least a week if you are subjected to them. That's close enough to being the same as far as I'm concerned.

If either of those songs get stuck in my head I'm going to off myself. I'll take some Billy Ocean getting stuck in there though.[QUOTE="imaps3fanboy"]

Advice takenA year ago I would have said metal easily, but now bands like Beach House, Wavves, Sleigh Bells, Fever Ray, Toro y Moi, Sun Glitters, etc. has probably made them equal in my eyes.
Same sort of textures, GreySeal9
No.
same sort of atmospheres, GreySeal9
No.
samey vocals inflections, etc. GreySeal9
No.
That's the problem when you try to compare two different things; we've got clueless people about metal and clueless people about pop. Just get a poll up there to clear things out before we get another one of these stupid battles.

same thing is happening with me and Folk/Country... My iPod has no metal on it for the first time ever... nothing but Horse Feathers, Bon Iver, The Tallest Man on Earth, Donovan, Lucinda Williams, Neko Case etc.
I like pop metal!! :PRod90Powerman 5000 ftw!! but on topic i don't think mainstream pop is that good... at all! Metal is wayy better. There is more variety.
Sleigh Bells are my newest obsession! When their songs pop up on my ipod it's so hard to contain myself and not rock out in public :PA year ago I would have said metal easily, but now bands like Beach House, Wavves, Sleigh Bells, Fever Ray, Toro y Moi, Sun Glitters, etc. has probably made them equal in my eyes.

Woah....those are not the same artists.:PYeah, but I'm saying that the pop umbrella is very large. It can ecompass everything from Kesha to Elton John.
I say metal because I find pop music to be annoying as hell. I love metal though so I guess I'm biased. :P

Those don't sound the same as eachother, but that first link does soundslike alot of other metal. A person not used to picking out small differences would struggle to be able to distinguish it from other metal.
The second one does admittedly have some different elements in the instrumental, but the dude's voice sound pretty typical as far more "melodic" metal is concerned.
I'm not saying that there is no variety at all in metal. But I find alot of the black/death metal to sound very samey.
I prefer metal, mainly because I've found hundreds of metal bands I enjoy, and almost no pop bands I enjoy.chessmaster1989
want some pop music suggestions? As a fellow metalhead, I could point you in the right direction...
Pop music is inherently made to be catchy,so is it's a genre that lacks depth for the most part.
Metal give me depth and emotion in droves, so I would have to say metal for me.
I guess it all depends on what kind of person you are and what resonates with you.
Edit: I also love and appreciate metal instrumentation as well as it's just another layer of metal goodness to enjoy.

Um... nometal is more or less pop now. most of the metal heads wouldn't agree with that statement i think, but a lot of honest musicians/composers would.

I will take metal over pop music, but some of the metal that is around, like was linked to earlier, Septic Whatever, sounds just like static to me. At least with Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath or the metal bands of the 80s like Armored Saint, you could at hear the music instead of being just noise. That said, I still listen to some Carly Simon on occasion (she is still hot).
Growing up during the 60s and 70s there was lots of good hard rock and heavy metal and progressive rock to keep me rocking til I die. There was some good pop music back then, but after that, it went down hill to what we have today. Ugh.
