When it comes to Metallica, there's no doubt that all their albums in the 1980's were amazing (from Kill Em All to And Justice for All), but after that they got progressively worse, with accusations that 1991's Black Album was the moment they sold out, with their lowest point being St Anger or Lulu-they haven't really managed to reach the critical success of their 80's albums (even though I thought Death Magnetic was a good return to the band's roots).

Megadeth-with the exception of Risk, Megadeth have never really sold out (and Risk is their worst album critically), and they've been able to consistently maintain their quality, with their magnum opus being Rust in Peace/Peace Sells, and their newest album Th1rt3en having done much better than Lulu.

In my opinion, Megadeth wins for me. Even though I listen to both groups and with some of their songs being my favorites (Metallica's Fade to Black and Megadeth's Take No Prisoners), their consistency throughout the years makes Megadeth a better band overall (for me at least).

What about you guys?

They have horrible "feel" in their rhythm sections, although I got love for Burton. They have stupid front men, as in they are not smart people with nothing worthwhile to say. Lars might be the worst drummer I have ever heard at that level. Stuff like that. I find both to be unimaginative and sonically frustrating. They both elevate the aspects of metal that I hate and reduce or remove the aspects of metal that I love.

I will agree that Lars is a poor drummer but I think Cliff is one of the most overrated musicians ever. There was nothing special about his playing and I feel he is held in such esteem because he met an early end.

Better body of work how? Metallica had 4 good albums then completely fell off a cliff. Megadeth had a few bad albums too but they've since rebounded and are pretty good again. Metallica just finds new ways to embarrass themselves.

Megadeth have been more consistent, but Metallica's best beats Megadeth's best in my opinion.

I vote Metallica, mainly down to Justice being amazing and Dave being an idiot.

Lars isn't just a poor drummer imo, he is a demon set loose to lower the standards of what a good drummer should do. He has the worst feel of any drummer I have heard and his time is a joke. I don't think I would argue that Cliff was a master musician but if I was forced to listen to Metallica I would pick his era.

Neither can James. At least Dave didn't turn into a whiny emo singer.

This - plus Dave's voice lasted a lot longer than Hetfield's did. Both are pretty bad now anyway.

Then again, Mustaine and Hetfield are in their 50's though-no longer at their prime in terms of vocal consistency.

Yup - the only one who still seems to hold his vocal skills is Dickinson. In fact it even seems he's improved, and I have no idea how.

Even if metallica didn't sell out, they would have never topped rust in peace

But metallica did sell out, so no competition really.

I don't think it's right to say their new crap is even selling out. The Black Album was selling out. After that the albums were just horrible. Doesn't matter that they weren't even metal anymore. You can go mainstream and still be good. NOBODY likes anything post-BA so I'm not sure who they sold out to.

Psh, only bad album was St. Anger. Load and Reload were good for what they were and DM is awesome. The extra four songs are especially awesome too.

From what I've heard Beyond Magnetic (EP) that was released after Lulu was pretty good-but then again it consists of tracks that didn't make it on Death Magnetic. Has anyone listened to Beyond Magnetic recently?

I've listened to a few songs off it; they're decent, but not worth more than a couple listens.

Ever since I heard songs like Peace Sells and Hangar 18 I've been a Megadeth fanboy. I just love their style more, especially because of Marty Friedman's guitar playing. Dave Mustaine had the luxury of having a few different guitarists to mix up their style every now and then.

I find it hard to consider anything Metallica did post-Kill 'Em All thrash metal. It's like hard rock and trad. metal with the occasional thrash riff or track (like Battery for example).

Megadeth on the other hand kept the hardcore spirit of thrash and was at least a little bit aggressive as opposed to Metallica's often pedestrian songwriting. Especially post-Burton. Plus Megadeth made Rust In Peace, and Peace Sells, both of which are better than anything Metallica did.

I Love me some Megadeth. I don't like Metallica much, but i will admit, they have done a lot for metal and the industry, and they have the decency of appreciating their fans, andd apologizing for just about everything they've done(lol) So.... who's better? idk, i voted Megadeth because i enjoy it more, but i a lot more respect for Metallica . ....Except for Lars, he's a douche, and a horrible drummer.
