Sorry, but this has gone way to far.

I currently live in monterrey/Nuevo Leon (near the USA border), also known as the second most developed city in Mexico, it also means its the second worst place you can live if you live here.

Its infested with corruption, not only is it incredibly unsafe to even leave your house, as of today, people cant even get to work due to organized crime being to powerfull. Today at around 4pm. the 10 most flooded streets in the city were blocked by minor gangsters wielding shotguns and smgs, they stopped random cars and forced the drivers to leave the vehicles, they somehow got the streets blocked with atleast 3 trucks per barricade.

The apparent cause, is that they want their leader freed or something similar. Its been almost 7 hours, every channel with a news porgram is transmitting live, and there is NOT A SINGLE SING of either the police or the army.

Guess where is the major and every politician/public security chief? At South-Africa taking a vacation.

This country may not be the worst, but hell its trying, people have 0 pride left, as long as they keep their jobs, they wont do anything against the higher-ups, let alone the mafia. I know alot of us citizens have families, and some of them are their respective heads, but this isnt worth it anymore.

Last month, some random girl no one knew about was found dead in her appartment, and since the mother is a psycho with connections at the most viewed news channel and the father has a similar perk, its been almost 2 months (and hundreds if not thounads have died since) yet the only thing you see on the news channel is this girls parents blaming each other, they even got the FBI to help.

I could go on all day, this place is horrible. Ill try to link the news when i find a page.

Moderator note - derogatory use of "retarded" removed.

So, what are we supposed to discuss here?

Corruption is not uncommon in developing countries.

Ask for help, or atleast learn from other countries.

For example, the USA doesnt negotiate with terrorist/kidnappers, if the authoritiez realize that someone you have somesort of connection has been kidnapped or threathened, they will contact you asap and freeze all your money to avoid paying.

In mexico you call the police and you just made the problem worse.

Its a damn shame that these idiots are ruining the image of Mexico. I feel so ashamed of the damn acts of crime in Mexico. The sad part is that this will never go away.

I read a report that 2010 is a year Mexico will fear because revolutions seem to happen every 100 years there. It seems that a revolution is on the horizon to me.

Well... that's the world for you. The government ignores the problem and keeps it out of general awarness. When the law fails it's up to the citizens to justify the problems, but if you were to do that the governmentwould label you as some vigilanty and put you in jail. So you're between a rock & hard place. You're left cut off & at the mercy of the wicked yet anything you could do would land you in prison.

If it's a dire as you say it is... the only option you have is be killed by them or go to prison for killing them. The systemsaren't fair and there is no justice. The television shows brain-wash the citizens into believing we have a high-tech nonon-sense justice for all legal system. But it's just fiction. They don't want people taking the law into their own hands when the government won't, because then everyone will know that the situation is so bad the area has become a war zone since the government isn't compitent enough to solve the problem.

Government's don't care if gangs terrorize downtown andover run the neigborhoods, because they live uptown where anybody who can't afford ahome there doesn't belong.

thats what happens when you live in a developing country. You are also part of the problem... why dont YOU do something about it? Become a cop and rise up the ranks to chief and help bring down crime. Become a strong politician and make a difference. Join the Military and fight the cartels. Become an outspoken leader in your community. You are doing nothing, expecting others to do what you are unwilling to do is cowardice on your part just as much as it is on theirs.

this hasn't really hit the news yet. but it's a national security crisis, no less. If the government fails to deal with the situation swiftly, it'll set a precedence for the criminal organisations - which remain the country's biggest pain in the neck.

there's a difference between government being corrupted and allowing outlaws to INVADE a city like it's still freaking 19th century. you don't see gangsters blocking streets in LA and declaring war to the federal government, do you?

I watched the news abot it just a few hours ago, I really don't know what to say, it's a terrible image to the country, like if we need to make it look worse, but sadly there's not too much we can do.

Do you really think that becoming a politician is that easy?, and still being one doesn't gives you an impenetrable shield, a few weeks ago a politician disapeared for some time, it turns out he was kidnaped but he escaped alive.

Wow, that sounds like a pain in the ass. I live in Norwalk Ca, and everything is cool here but I do hear a lot about Mexico and it's corruption problems. Oh, and I can guarantee you that most of these politicians on vacation are in South Africa for the world cup. It could be a whole month until they return.

well the problem is trying to combat the cartels, there's awalys going to be a criminal element, you might as well negotiate with it.

just let them sell their drugs to america, let it fight them if they want. It's americas drug addiction that is responsible.

then it's win all round, people get drugs and no one fights.

...Um they kill anyone who opposes what the gangsters say. So if you want to be a good cop they'll send people to kill your family and then you.

The Mexican government's bid to combat the rampant drug trade is quite courageous, and won't be accomplished without signifigant bloodshed on all fronts - it's the criminals in the streets waving guns around - menacing innocent people - who are the real cowards down there...

That responsibility falls on the government, there's nothing any citizen could do about it

The failure on government's part to eradicate those gangsters enable them to be bold and reckless, because these gangsters knew no one has the guts (military & police) to oppose them. Anyone who tried ended up dead. I remember reading articles about any police chefs who wanted to rid of those gangsters were all assassinated within weeks of their appointment... talk about doing good for the country

It is very sad and frustrating indeed, for everyone who lives in Mexico at the time being. Within stability in the country it is very difficult to prosper as a country

I doubt a Revolution is going to happen, since the radicals that usually form the core of a revolution probably ended up joining one of the various cartels already.

I strongly disagree with you. I also happen to live in Monterrey and I'm well aware of this situation. People are not cowards, its the government that is coward. The government here doesnt want to stop this issue when the solution to this drug dealers is actually pretty simple (and I don't mean freeing their leader). What Mexico needs is a change in government. It is unacceptable that two days after a 14 year old was killed within Mexican territory by a CBP agent or whatever, the president is flying South Africa to be a guest at the inaugural match of the world cup. He should be dealing with this issue instead, and demanding the culprit to be extradited to Mexico since the boy was killed within Mexican territoty. Now, you may not have pride left, but I and many others, still have lots of Mexican pride. You must remember that Mexico is not its government, it is its people. There are still a lot of honest Mexicans out there that are willing to fight for what this country deserves. Its only a matter of time until Mexico finally undergoes a revolution to overthrow our government and begin to switch things around.

The entire Mexican system has been overrun by drug lords and endemic corruption. You need to fire every single current government official, and replace them all with a single dictator, marshial law, total curfew, and the military on every single street of every single city with tanks and aircraft and the directive to go into every single dwelling and slaughter anything that looks suspcicious.

Mexico isn't a country of cowards in my opinion. They are an aggressive and passionate people by tradition. Criminal elements in a specific area usually adopt the customs of their area and twist them to further their violent agendas. That is exactly what is happening in Mexico.

I was just got back not long ago from a week-long stay in Juarez and provided that you don't do anything stupid like walk around alone at night or get involved with any sort of business involving illegal drugs, you'll most likely be fine. There's the possibility that one could get shot at by mistake or by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, which was something I was thinking about before I went there, but then I think about how I could have died during the 12-hour drive there (or back), while crossing the street, or while eating a yummy-ass enchilada. If I had the opportunity to go back to Juarez again, I'd gladly take it. Because I just love Mexico.
