Link.

This zero tolerance policy has got to be abolished. Even if it was a practical joke, you don't expect middle school students to always make rational decisions and I find it offensive that something you do as a kid can impact your ability to attend college. Kids should be allowed to be kids. Should they be punished? Probably, butafew hoursof detention should be more than enough to teach them a lesson.

Is it me or do school officials go on power trips too often? The main concern here is what is best for the kids and suspension isn't it. One more reason to go to private schools I guess. Many can get their point accross without screwing a student over.

It doesn't surprise me. In my middle and high school if you got caught with oregano (or anything that could be seen as weed), you were expelled, not suspended.

Patrick Grass. Lulz :P But yeah I'm guessing it's the same thing when someone brings a fake gun to school. Had a friend who was suspended for 10 days because he brought a water gun to school.

I put Oregano on just about everything I eat.

I feel almost compelled to do it... as if, it had some control over me.

And FYI, suspension is not zero tolerance...

Pirate700

Not to mention the fact that the kids are warned not to bring any of that stuff to school and told the consequences should they decide to break that rule...

To OP... The argument that kids make stupid decisions because they are kids is ridiculous... If you go by that logic, then decisions made at 18, 21, all the way up to 24-26 shouldn't count... Because prior to being 24ish-26ish... The human brain is still developing... So in that sense, they don't have the full brain capacity of an adult yet... Which is a ridiculous argument... Because anyone older than 10 can comprehend rules, use reason, and common sense...

If you are told "bringing any substance to school will get you suspended" and you proceed to bring a substance to school... That has nothing to do with being a kid... And everything to do with being an idiot.

I don't care what the drinking age is... Germany is a good example of how a drinking age doesn't even matter... Beer is a staple of most people's diet in that nation, and even children can drink alcohol... It doesn't matter because the idea of drinking and driving is so badly shunned there that most people don't even consider it... Yet here drinking and driving is a big joke... You and your friends walk out of a bar so drunk you can barely stand and someone might say "think you should be driving man" and most ignorant Americans respond with something along the lines of "haha man nah i got this lol"...

Just look at the stats:

Germany (2008): Population: ~80M --- Alcohol related vehicle deaths: 523

United States (2008): Population ~300M (375% of Germany) --- Alcohol related vehicle deaths: 11,773 (2200% of Germany)

The point is older people are generally more rational and a child shouldn't be punished for the rest of his or her life for something they did in middle school. I know tons of people that used to get in to all kinds of trouble and have turned their lives around. If you make it harder for someone to turn their life around by limiting their ability to earn money later in life they are not going to change. Besides, it's just a little oregano. It's not like they killed someone.

Exactly when I was in middle school we were WELL aware of what zero tolerance was (which again this isn't) and we knew not to bring anything drug or gun RELATED or you are gone.

It doesn't surprise me. In my middle and high school if you got caught with oregano (or anything that could be seen as weed), you were expelled, not suspended.

Pirate700
And you think this is a good, rational decision? This isn't zero tolerance policy, but I knew a kid who had his car broken into by police (it was parked on a street near the school) for having chef's knives (in a pack labeled cooking utensils) in the back seat. It turns out he attended a cooking class at the local community college after school. The kid was STILL fined and suspended. That's zero tolerance policy at it's stupidest.

pot is so dangerous that if something even looks like it it has to be eradicated.

if you want to see what using pot can do and how low it can take you just look at the last 3 presidents of the u.s.

warn your kids folks it's a gateway drug... to the presidency!!!

Unfortunately you gotta make sure you don't bring these things on campous. If I had something in my car that I knew wasn't allowed on school grounds, I'd tripple check to make sure it's not in there when I'm at school.

Kids do stupid **** today. He claimed he was "holding it for a friend". Who says he wasn't trying to sell it fake pot to some dumb kids at school for a quick buck. The bottom line is he should have had the sense not to have a bag filled with oregano in school as it would at the very least look extremely bad.

Yeah, but don't you think it's a little ridiculous? It's not exactly rational for schools to act this way, especially when all it does is cost taxpayers more money...

It wasn't on campus it was near campus.. This is fearmongering that provides 99% of the time the dumbest rulings for people rather than actually preventing anything bad from happening.. You have a greater chance of getting killed in a car accident on the way to school to ever get killed in a campus or public school.. Yet we freak out with the later much more than we ever do with the prior.

Unfortunately you gotta make sure you don't bring these things on campous. If I had something in my car that I knew wasn't allowed on school grounds, I'd tripple check to make sure it's not in there when I'm at school.

Yeah, but don't you think it's a little ridiculous? It's not exactly rational for schools to act this way, especially when all it does is cost taxpayers more money...

Suspending the kid doesn't cost the school anything.

Its a pointless punishment, the boy should have been talked to.. Now they are just going to give him a nice day off..

It doesn't surprise me. In my middle and high school if you got caught with oregano (or anything that could be seen as weed), you were expelled, not suspended.

... oh poor me... I wanted my meal with parsley. Seriously, authorities should learn to lay off a little. Being THAT intolerant is just counterproductive.

Look, you cant suspend people based on "My paranoid self thinks he might...". The best he could have done with that joke would be to have a small talk about drugs and call him to reason. Not just skip everything and go straight to punishing.

They should start punishing students that are caught with glue, a substance that is far more harmful sniffing than a cooking spice.

Imagine how much of an uproar there'll be when the cooking class makes pizza.
