God's love is colour-blind. Not so, it seems, when it comes to the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs in Mississippi.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jul/29/mississippi-church-african-american-wedding

Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson, an African American couple from nearby Jackson, were all set for their big wedding day on Saturday at the 150-year-old church that they have been attending regularly for months. The sanctuary of the church had been arranged, the rehearsal was set for Friday, invitations had been sent out to friends extending a "special thank you to the First Baptist Church and members".

Then, at about 5.10pm on Thursday evening Te'Andrea received a call. Some of the congregation of the church, which is largely white, had seen a group of black women setting up the sanctuary for the wedding and complained to the pastor.

"If the pastor married her, because they were black then they would vote him out," Te'Andrea was told. The wedding was off.

I'm pretty sure these people aren't African.

I don't know who's more out of touch, the pastor trying to perserve a racist tradition , or this article author who assumes all black people are part of the same ethnicity.

Racism is one thing, however the fact that the pastor cancelled the wedding just incase he might have lost some votes is disgraceful.

I have personally witnessed racism within a church that I have been a part of myself. As such, I have become quite vocal to them about how a lack of love for neighbor exhibits a lack of love for Jesus. If someone is incapable of being a brother in Christ with someone of another ethnicity then that individual needs to repent of his sin. As 1 John 2:9 points out, if someone professes to be a Christian but hates his brother then he is still in darkness and the truth is not in him.

Good job Mississipi, way to further stereotypes and make the non asshats of your state be even further embarrassed.

And come on everyone knows Jesus was black, what the hell people.

"Te'Andrea" what? Her parents thought the name "Andrea" was lacking so they added "Te"? Eh, still not as bad as "Jermajesty", "Audio Science" or "Pilot Inspektor".

How is this even legal anyway? Are there not discrimination laws? The primary reason for the refusal is because of their skin colour, so I can't see how someone can defend that in the 21st century.

Some people believe churches are allowed to discriminate "within reason" (whatever the fvck that means) so I guess it wouldn't be that farfetched for it to be allowed in sh1thole state like Mississippi.

Hmm yeah, can't say I agree with that if we're talking about someone's skin colour here - no basis other than bigotry.

Aljosa23

Here is a list of what Mississippi holds the #1 title at in the U.S

1. Most Conservative
2. Most Obese
3. Lowest IQ
4. Most Racist
5. Worst Education System in the Country
6. Most Religious

I'm probably missing a few, but it gives you some perspective. The most conservative and religious states all tend to have one thing in common, they all share low national IQ's, they share a high level of intolerance (homosexuality, racism etc) and they all have terrible education systems.

So yeah, nobody should be surprised here. After all..... This is Mississippi that we are talking about

Yeah, sorry but I think that's ridiculous. Just like with the WBC, they can wind you up but you better not react to their provocative behaviour - or you'll be the one carted off the jail.

While I think it's completely shameful that they banned the wedding, if you want to react to it, just don't go. You don't have to react violently.

While I find racism and any other form of discrimination to be horrible, they do have their rights to religion even if their religion is racist. No church should be forced to marry a couple if that goes against their beliefs.

If you disagree with your church go find a different one that is closer to your beliefs or start your own.

I don't think their religion is racist, they're attendees at the church regularly. This isn't to do with religion, it's to do with backwards bigots who get upset over skin colour.

when your a pastor, that means your a servant of God, meaning you always ask yourself, what would Jesus do. In the bible Jesus helped everyone and anyone. He had no hate in his heart even for the people who crucified him. This pastor didn't marry this couple not because he had a problem with it, it was because his racist congregation had a problem with it and he would have been kicked out. So instead of sticking to what Jesus would have done he was a coward and called it off. This is what why i no longer have faith, its not that not seeing God or feel his presence made me lose faith, its the people who say they serve him who make me lose faith. Also this happened in Mississippi and that state is racist as f*ck so i'm not surprised and if they racial tendencies then have the right to have them but its sad that in this day and age i'm reading articles of Churches that won't marry people just because of their skin color

If that does happen, then what you are describing is resentment towards being oppressed or at the worst group bias. That happens all around the world. It has nothing to do with feeling superior towards a race.

You are advocating totalitarianism. Why should the pastor be forced to marry a couple if he doesn't want to? The couple is free to find another pastor. They don't even need a pastor or a church to get married. The right to be free includes the right to make objectionable decisions and have objectionable values. Someone's rights don't become void just because you disagree with their actions (or in this case, nonaction). The pastor didn't harm anyone by refusing to marry them, and the pastor is not their slave and is therefore under no obligation to do what they want just because they want him to.

[QUOTE="Laihendi"][QUOTE="Ravensmash"][QUOTE="Laihendi"] The pastor has the right to marry whoever he wants, and not marry whoever he wants. If he doesn't want to marry them that's his decision to make, not the government's.

Well, frankly it should be the government's if he's going to exclude people because of skin colour. He obviously can't do a very good job, if he's bowing down to prejudice in 2012. F*ck his rights, he's supporting racist attitudes.

Did anyone read the article? The pastor married them at a different church because he didn't want to cause problems at the church he was at.
