For me it would have to be the bridge of destiny outro solo by Arch Enemy, it is simply breath taking, mezmerizing and an absolute example that speed isnt all that is needed for a good solo. Here is a video of the solo being played live, you wont regret it!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38t9akRJQ54

Mikael Åkerfeldt's solo in Sörskogen's "Mordet i Grottan". I don't know about "awe-inspiring", but it's certainly my favourite and, in my opinion, one of the finer pieces done by Åkerfeldt.

Perhaps the solo in Coheed and Cambrias "The Final Cut" just because it is of similar style to David Gilmour.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cTWMg8q-08 -That is live it is much better than the studio version.

Any solo in a Pink Floyd song is drenched in epic. David Gilmour just flat out brings it to the table and lays it out with every solo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFKm3AEdG4w

That is of course, Comfortable Numb.

I didn't know Akerfeldt was in a band besides Opeth. I'll have to check them out.

My favorite guitar solo would have to be the one in Kissing The Shadows, by Children of Bodom.

The unison John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess play in Blind Faith by Dream Theater.

I'm not a huge shred fan, but that such an amazing solo.

The live version of In This River by Black Label Society. So emotional. Another personal favorite is the solo in No More Tears by Ozzy. One of if not the best solo of the 90s.

The intro to Metal Meltdown by Judas Priest, the second solo in Great King Rat by Queen, or the entire second half of Hangar 18 by Megadeth, also the solo during the outro for Gusty like the Wind by Maylene in the Sons of Disaster is pretty awesome in a very get-out-your-lighters kind of way.

I also think the solo in "Go To Hell" by Megadeth is pretty kickass.

That solo consists of Kurt Cobain bending some strings and basically making his guitar sound like it's dying.

I'm a Nirvana fan, but Kurt Cobain was far from a great guitarist.

Perhaps if he distributed those sounds among an actual MELODY.

You don't have to be a great technician to write a great solo. Kurt Cobain never wrote a great solo. He played glorified bridges.

But it's not good.

Plenty of people who aren't technically proficient have written great solos. I'm just saying Kurt Cobain's not one of them.

There is a common misconception. I am not a Nirvana fan but outside of Nirvanas music and the intentionally sloppy playing Kurt showed plenty of musical intelligence and guitar skill. Of course in Nirvana he never showed it.
