Pirate Radio is my choice. It is sad how disappointing that film is, and part of the reason is that more than 10 minutes were cut from it in America, the original title was The boat that rocked, which is a much better title. Also the scenes were changed around so the film doesn't flow very well and seems more convoluted than it really is. There are too many characters, they funny parts are not funny enough and the serious parts are taken too seriously. This is a shame because the director wrote one of the greatest British sitcoms ever, blackadder:D which was heavily rooted in history. That is what made it so good, while Pirate Radio just vaguely refers to the real Pirate Radio and avoids most of the actual history which could have added so much to the film. In the end the film has too many things going on and too many characters to give a crap about and not enough reason to care about them. Also the cliche part about the government trying them down could have been done much better, Kenneth Baranagh was great but he was wasted in the government scenes.
Another disappointment was A Christmas Carol. I have seen countless christmas films and a few Christmas carols, but this just felt hollow. I loved the effects, and the voice work was great by everyone. In the end though it was all flash and no substance, the story has been done so many times before and better that this film only had it's visuals and that was not enough.
I also watched The Box recently and it was just dumb. The concept was good, I love the original short story but this film was just too ridiculous to take seriously. Good acting for the most part. Richard Kelly is a talented director, but this and Southland tales show that he is starting to lose his creative grip. Maybe next time he will get it right.
