So what are the genre(s) of music that you find to be the least accessible?
For me there is a clear winner... drone. I have tried for months to like it yet I am no closer :(I might just have to give up lol.

I'd guess the more extreme types of Metal, starting with Death and Black metal, and just going deeper in that direction. People usually just dismiss them as "nothing but screaming"..
For me It'd probably be hard-core punk. I'll listen to one song, and It'll be catchy, have clever lyrics, and an appealing sound in general all wrapped in a nice short package. Then I'll listen to another song that's the same two chords over and over, and lyrics laced with copious amounts of profanity, bodily excrement, and all manner of nasty things that would make a sailor blush. It's just to diverse. One minuet I'll hear something I like, the next I'll be totally grossed out.
Either Noise Music (possible oxymoron) or Math Rock
Post-rock is the first that came to mind. There are a couple post-rock bands like Explosions in the Sky who are relatively easy to get into though. JML897Lol I guess, Since most post rock doesn't have lyrics (alot of people don't seem to like that), but hey, at least it has a semblance of melody. :P
I expected black metal, but not post rock lol. Why did post rock come to mind? wigan_gamer
Post-rock came to mind because of the fact that the tracks are usually pretty long and post-rock is for the most part instrumental. I don't know much about metal so that's why I didn't say a metal genre.
Noise like Merzbow was a better answer. I don't get the appeal of that at all.
[QUOTE="110million"]Anything after 1990. DmadFearmongerActually, things became TOO accessible after that True, but it is inaccessible to me. :P
Hip-Hop/R&B for me.
I would say Black Metal, but then I actually like some Black Metal songs (especially those with really nice melodies).

Personally I loves me some drone. I play around and make my own attempts at drone music myself.
I'd say contemporary country (basically pop music with a twang) is one genre that, for the most part, I just cannot get into.

Man drone is so hard to like, for me at least. I wouldn't class country as inaccessible, but I do not like it.[QUOTE="wigan_gamer"]I expected black metal, but not post rock lol. Why did post rock come to mind? JML897

fair enough :) you could have just said metal as an answer rather than specify if you tried to get into it but didn't like it. And I haven't even tried to listen to noise, I am not quite sure what it is tbh.[QUOTE="worlock77"][QUOTE="wigan_gamer"]

What I meant was that drone I do not understand but country (new and old) I can but I dislike it anyway. I think thats what you wanted clearing up :)[QUOTE="worlock77"][QUOTE="wigan_gamer"] Man drone is so hard to like, for me at least. What I meant was that drone I do not understand but country (new and old) I can but I dislike it anyway. I think thats what you wanted clearing up :)No, not really. In your original post I took the "that you find inaccessible" bit to mean "that you just can't get into". Am I correct in this understanding?
I think theres a difference between not getting it and not liking it, at least thats how I see it. I can at least see the appeal of country and see why people like it, but with drone I do not. Thats how I think of it anyway, if its just noise for example means you don't understand it, so its inaccessible to you.
You answered correctly, I just have 2 different levels of inaccessibility if you like.
I'd say that drone is very difficult to enjoy. It's still more accessible than Merzbow-style noise though. Grindcore and the really harsh, lo-fi style black metal (think early Ulver or something) are probably up there too.
Special award goes to Enka. Youtube it or something if you don't know what it is. While not as blatantly offputting as the above, I imagine it's challenging for Western listeners. I can't tolerate it.
[QUOTE="Jesus_on_fire"]Is that a real genre or did u make it up lol?Real genre, has its own wiki page.Another contender is power electronics.

Post-rock is the first that came to mind. There are a couple post-rock bands like Explosions in the Sky who are relatively easy to get into though. JML897Most of my friends find post-rock pretty easy, they just need to get over the "usually no vocals" hurdle. I'd say free-jazz is the most inaccessible. That's intense stuff.

Your favorite bands have done most of their work after 1990 :?
Yes, that's true. I was reffering to pop music. The most recently discovered: Dubstep.
It seems to be all the rage at universities nowadays but I cannot, for the life of me, find anything pleasing about the sound signature (bass distortions). So far its the second most inaccesible genre to my ears after screamo.

Yeah free jazz took me a while to get into as well, was worth it though :)
I wouldn't say dubstep is too inaccessible, just boring. I think dubstep works better when small passages/noises/sounds are used that would be considered dubstep in other electronic genres. On its own though I just get bored after 1 or 2 tracks.
Well, drone is certainly....different. Have you been into ambient music for a while? I find it was a good bridge genre for me to get further into drone. Eluvium is some pretty solid ambient that does the trick. On the harder side of things, you could also try hybrid bands like Nadja (The Bungled and the Botched is a good starting point)So what are the genre(s) of music that you find to be the least accessible?

Yeah I enjoy a lot of ambient stuff, even some of the more minimalistic songs, but drone is just taking it to another level. I like some of nadjas stuff, but some of it I didn't. Ambient definitely isn't a favorite or popular listen of mine, it is used mainly when I am playing something chilled out, but it has its purposes.
I detest "genres" as such. Waay too many artists have created random sub genres just to be pretentious **** Certain sounds i hate but not i rarely even accept little sub genres. I dont even know what the hell Mathcore is.
Mathcore is metalcore at heart that uses unorthodox time signatures or multiple time signature changes throughout songs, if the heaviness isn't you thing math rock is nice too. Also it isn't to be pretentious... its used so we can pigeon hole bands obviously.I detest "genres" as such. here are a few examples of mathcore (which is a great genre I should add):
Song 1 - Leaders of the genre IMO
Song 2 - Second favorite.

I would highly rec attempting to get into it, My progression went mathcore - mathrock - grind. I actually found mathrock harder to get into lolwigan_gamerProbably gonna be a different story for me. I've got a history with Progressive Rock. But not Core. What bands would you recommend?

Its songs like that that make me empathise with people who just say metal is just noise to them. I love me some metal/hard rock but thats just silly imho.
