You mean the "scene" core, or the actual good metalcore too? Regardless with mathcore the album that got me into it was The dillinger escape plan - Ire works. Their "worst" album, but most accessible.

With mathrock I really got into it with This town needs guns - Animals. I still really dig this album, so give it a look :)

I detest "genres" as such. Waay too many artists have created random sub genres just to be pretentious **** Certain sounds i hate but not i rarely even accept little sub genres. I dont even know what the hell Mathcore is.

Ilovegames1992

Mathcore is metalcore at heart that uses unorthodox time signatures or multiple time signature changes throughout songs, if the heaviness isn't you thing math rock is nice too. Also it isn't to be pretentious... its used so we can pigeon hole bands obviously.

here are a few examples of mathcore (which is a great genre I should add):

Song 1 - Leaders of the genre IMO

Song 2 - Second favorite.

Its songs like that that make me empathise with people who just say metal is just noise to them. I love me some metal/hard rock but thats just silly imho.

You just dont get it yet, thats fine. If you don't make an effort you will never get past the its just noise phase.

I prefer their old songs tbh, thats why I linked it. All their albums are great though. But I agree that song is a bit more varied, but if you dont like panasonic youth DEP aren't for you anyway

I can't really rule out the possibility of getting into the genre......it'll probably like when I first listened to Symphonia......a nice refreshing break from the constant guttural vocals and blast beats :P

Free Jazz, Industrial (Like Throbbing Gristle, not NIN.), Avant-Garde and Experimental, Alot of the more extreme subgenres of Metal and Punk.

I generally greatly enjoy alot of that kind of stuff aside from bands like Throbbing Gristle and whatnot. They're just too experimental for my tastes.

Argh I forgot to put music in the title wigan_gamer
And for that you got the nice little "edit" option in the drop down menu to the right at your post.

I feel that Opera is a very inaccessible genre... I can't get over the pain that genre inflicts upon me. :P

I'd say certain J-Pop song's. They're just too damn cute (I mean that in a bad way) to the point you can't take it seriously but they could eventually grow on you.

I've found that a lot of people find jazz really difficult. I am a massive fan of jazz and it is perhaps my favorite genre, and when I mention that to people, they are really confused and surprised. They ask me for some recommendations, I give them, and they come back later saying that they just didn't get it. My friends aren't fools and almost all of them have played instruments and yet they still can't really understand jazz...either that or they just find it dull.

Some avant gard Jazz, no wave, first wave industrial music (Throbbing Gristle)and the subsequent noise experiement offshoots from that (Whitehouse)- all are difficult to connect with. I guess the latter are more about creating noise landscapes, and in some way antimusic. Kind of an extension of performance art rather than conventional music. I'll also throw in gabba techno- certainly in the 90s it was vicious, impossible to dance to neumatic drill speed electronica.Nasty stuff really.

Telling people my favorite music is almost always the same annoying conversation, I say emo, they either have no clue about it or name some scene post hardcore band. Both lead to the same conversation about me educating them on the genre, either followed by negative judgement thinking im wierd (not entirely untrue) or they ask for recs :P But yes jazz is bloody hard to like I found!

^^ Good call on gabber. That is definitely an endurance test.

Not a genre, but a band: Big Black. There have been very few bands that were as actively hostile to the audience as they were. Maybe Throbbing Gristle and early Swans. As much industrial as they were punk, their music was very harsh and abrasive, with an extremely mechanical and inhuman sound. Not to mention their lyrics... Check out stuff like "My Disco" or "Jordan, Minnesota" for examples.

True I guess Big Black were at times difficult to connect with, as was most of that Blast First kind of sound. I thought Atomizer was a little more accessible that Songs About... mind you. I've heard a couple of Swans songs but really don't know too much about them to comment. The ones I heard just sounded kind of, morose if anything...

Yeah, early Swans and later Swans are pretty much two entirely different bands. The early records, Cop/Young God and Greed/Holy Money, are extremely difficult listening. Molasses slow (like funeral doom pace) beats with noise guitar and a maniacal vocalist shrieking pure mistanthropy. Later on, they evolved into a sort of dark folk ensemble, with very sad lyrics and gorgeous instrumentation. The Burning World and White Light From the Mouth of Infinity are two of my all-time favorite records.

But seriously, those early records are for adventurous listeners only.

Oh I enjoy the odd sonic adventure, so maybe it could be worth a peek. As it's winter down under I can't listen to anything too gloomy though. When it's cold and grey it just accentuates the misery - maybe I'll leave until the suns got his hat back on...

I remember going to my one and only gabber night in the mid 90s - a right state still going on a double nighter. Probably one of the more amusing evenings nestled in a sketchy illegal club under the M32 in Bristol - watching people dance to that stuff is amazing. All you can really do when the BPM goes north of 200 is convulse, but hell s*** people were giving a good go.
