True I guess Big Black were at times difficult to connect with, as was most of that Blast First kind of sound. I thought Atomizer was a little more accessible that Songs About... mind you. I've heard a couple of Swans songs but really don't know too much about them to comment. The ones I heard just sounded kind of, morose if anything...

Yeah, early Swans and later Swans are pretty much two entirely different bands. The early records, Cop/Young God and Greed/Holy Money, are extremely difficult listening. Molasses slow (like funeral doom pace) beats with noise guitar and a maniacal vocalist shrieking pure mistanthropy. Later on, they evolved into a sort of dark folk ensemble, with very sad lyrics and gorgeous instrumentation. The Burning World and White Light From the Mouth of Infinity are two of my all-time favorite records.
But seriously, those early records are for adventurous listeners only.
Oh I enjoy the odd sonic adventure, so maybe it could be worth a peek. As it's winter down under I can't listen to anything too gloomy though. When it's cold and grey it just accentuates the misery - maybe I'll leave until the suns got his hat back on...
