Who are some of the craziest figures in history? be they actors, historical figures, etc.? Hitler would have had to been somewhat off kilter to become so paranoid and obsessive. Not to mention the things he preached. Another would be Shiro Ishii, read about him to see why but the guy was a nutzoid

Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Bush Jnr. to name a few. All subject to megalomaniac fantasies of living up to imaginary legacies which never existed.

Kim Il Sung. He's certainly one of the most self absorbed persons to ever live. His government was as oppressive as oppressive can be and he would regularly have people enslaved in labor camps for the most minute things like forgetting to polish your picture of him (which was mandatory to have in ever north korean household, by the way). In North Korea, there's a statue of him every ten feet and the only TV station that's available is one that's full of disdain towards americans. He wanted to be worshiped as a god and would kill anyone who refused to adhere to his disgusting cult. He was a walking devil.

Nero and Caligula. There's actually a good show on the history channel called "Ancients Behaving Badly" that psychologically assesses tyrants in the past. They recently did Ghengis Khan and found him to be the closest match to Julius Caesar, not mad just very driven.

god im sick of "something people in history" threads and people posting Hitler.

Anyway, I'd say Vlad Tepes, Elizabeth Bathory, Joseph Mengele, Caligula and yeah maybe Nero.

By insane, are you referring to a state of mental health in which one has lost touch with reality? This is the most common usage of insanity, and refers to "psychosis".

By this definition, you probably NEVER would have heard of any of the most insane people in history, because they would be so loony that they would have lived most of their entire life in a mental institution and/or be totally impeded and never make any contribution that would go down notably in history books. Think of a guy who sticks peanut butter in their ears and keeps saying "RIBBIT! RIBBIT!" while licking their fingers for no reason at all. That's insane.

Contrarily, any person who has enough mental stability to plan, organize, rationalize, and lead an entire country cannot possibly be one of the most insane person in history. Hitler had different ideals than most humans, but he's far from a loony.

Stalin was pretty crazy. He started making up crazy conspiracy theories and ideas that people he knew were trying to kill him/rid him of his power. And he had a lot of people killed because of it.

yeah stalin's paranoia is simply astounding.

.. Paranoia is a must if you want to hold onto a tyrannical government.. The tyrants that live the longest and stay in power, are the ones that are most paranoid in having secret police and other such things.. If anything becoming paranoid in such a position is the most sane thing to do for self preservation.

Serial killers, all of them. The end. Insane people don't get elected to power or stage coups to get it. The only insane people I can remember that were leaders, were those born into rulership.

See Serial killers are not insane.. They are psychopathic or sociopathic.. The famous ones that have been convicted were found to be competent enough to stand trial in knowing what they did was wrong and the consquences of that. Insanity is usually defined as a state in which the mind loses all grasp of reality in which the person can not understand the consquences of their actions and what not.

I'm actually surprised by that. I always thought serial killers did not know what they were doing is wrong. But, the traits of psychos and sociopaths both lack sympathy. Wonder if there is actual treatment.

They knew what they were doing was wrong.. A psychopath lacks empathy or regret.. They can still understand what they are doing is wrong and illegal within society though and do it any way.. If this were not the case, these serial killers would not be secretive and show a active sense of never getting caught.... A person that is suffering from schizophrenia on the otherhand depending how bad it is cannot..

Yet again whats the difference? Andrew Jackson purposely sent small pox blankets to local Native Americans.. He signed the Indian Removal Act.. Which led to the trail of tears.. He may have never killed as many as Hitler But in the end who knows because Andrew Jackson did not have the same kind of resources and control Hitler did.. This is not defending Hitler nor condoning his actions.. I am merely pointing it out that Hitler's ideals may have never been a anomally only the fact that he was able to get so much power to do so.. How many more genocides in history would occur if the wrong people got ahold of enough power?
