and I just recently seen Babel, which is pretty pretentious

Waking Life. An hour and a half of Richard Linklater performing self-fellatio is not high up on my list of greatest moments.
edit - also, I don't really see how Babel is pretentious. Are movies with a foreign feel automatically pretentious?
DJ_Lae
Waking Life was fascinating.
Babel was pretentious because the director clearly thought it was brilliant... IT wasn't. THe connections between the characters were very very loose, ESPECIALLY the japanese story line, which could have been done without entirely. Of course they wanted an excuse to have a confused japanese deaf girl, so they left it in... The whole movie carried on a "holier than though" sentement.
Terrible movie.

I liked the Japanese story the best out of all the threads, although I definitely agree that its link to the others was pretty weak. As I watched the movie I kept thinking "Oh, okay, that's how this fits with the other piece" and I was sure the Japanese segment would have this massive reveal and...it never did.
It was a more interesting character study than the other bits, particularly the Mexican nanny and the couple's kids. That one was just boring.
Waking Life was visually interesting but the dialogue kept reminding me of all the self-obsessed blowhards who'd constantly hold their hand up in Philosophy class.

I have yet to see Waking Life but I completly agree with you on Babel.
The Matrix, pop philosophy bull...nikc666
I'll agree on the second 2. the first one was pretty good. I'm not a big movie buff, but most of There Will Be Blood was pretty boring they could have easily cut out 45 minutes of the movie IMO. but luckily the end made it all better.
Babel, King Kong (2005) and Lord of the rings trilogySuperMario_46What's pretentious about the latter two?
The Matrix and Donnie Darko, no way.
It seems to me that a lot of people are intimidated by movies with any sort of philosphical undertones.

Oh please, I'm fine with philosophy. Ghost in the Shell is a fantastic film and that's the film the Wachowski brothers basically ripped off (really well I might add). However Donnie Darko is just so pretencious it's not even funny. Celler door? Really?
I'm gonna put up my flame shield and say Fight Club. I've heard from everyone all about why I should have loved the pants off of it, but I just flat-out didn't like it at all.GabuEx
I did enjoy that film, but I didn't think it deserved half the hype it was given.

I hate the matrix because it's pop philosophy for the masses, and yet it's being hailed as a philosophical masterpiece when it's anything but.

Watch out Keanu Reeves might be watching you!

Loved the movie but hated the fact that people when out and started fight clubs. They didn't get the movie at all...
I'm going to give this a shot and say ... Citizen Kane.
I just didn't get it. *runs to go watch Mulholland Dr.*
SimpJee
Nobody REALLY gets that film that is why it is ranked number 1 for greatest of all-time. Because people are pretentious and want to believe they are smarter then they really are so they say they get the film...

Its his sled. Its his sled from when he was a child. There, I just saved you two boobless hours....(reference to popular show) LOLOLOL
I'm going to throw it out there and say Juno. It felt forcebly "indie", like the director was standing behind me, bludgeoning me while screaming "SEE, ISN'T THIS QUIRKY?!? SHE DRANK SUNNY D, THAT'S SO INDIE!"
Add to that that some of the soundtrack was horrific.
The soundtrack was good, not to mention it felt the movie very well....I'm going to throw it out there and say Juno. It felt forcebly "indie", like the director was standing behind me, bludgeoning me while screaming "SEE, ISN'T THIS QUIRKY?!? SHE DRANK SUNNY D, THAT'S SO INDIE!"

QFT. When my sister starts liking it, I know it's not indie.
Magnolia was good.
That one with Santori time in Japan that all the critics liked. It had Bill Murray. That's the most pretentious film I've ever seen.
Looked it up.
Lost in Translation. :|

Agreed on that and pretty much every one of his movies.

I watched Lost in Translation because the cover had a review saying it was "hilarious". I was bitterly dissapointed.

I don't know, I thought 'Cellar Door' was a good little reference...I really like the movie.

The movie had great philosphical undertones, it was great. Perhaps it is 'philosophy for the masses' but doesn't that make it the most appealing philosophy.
History of the World, Part 1.
So pretentious, it indicated a sequel that it never warranted :o
Jandurin
Oh man that movie was hillarious!!!
