donnie darko was not really good at all. there was no real point to it. it's like "find your own point". a movie that was great and needs to be watched more is memento. Christopher Nolan knows how to direct. jlh47:? Completely different movie.
At least you can enjoy Donnie Darko a second time. Watching Memento more than once is impossible.

if you call a poorly written script that only pretentious highschoolers and freshman college students like enjoyable. watch the prestige, machinist, and butterfly effect.

Prestige was pretty sweet, though. Then again, I liked the Illusionist more.

Thank you for reminding me of that. Overrated, pretentious crap in my very correct opinion... Er- I mean, humble. ;)

I think you people just looked too hard for some underlying message, as opposed to just letting the movie soak in.butterfly effect was not... lolz, was not not poorly written.[QUOTE="jlh47"]if you call a poorly written script that only pretentious highschoolers and freshman college students like enjoyable. watch the prestige, machinist, and butterfly effect. liar! you know prestige was better!! you know it or the bunny gets it!poor bunny :(

Well, better he gets it now then grows up to be a disillusioned rabbit that escapes from his cage only to get ravaged by a fox, with a miraculous escape just to get run over by a truck. :?
"think of the symbolism!"Ninja-HippoYeah. Seriously. I was like, meh, after the movie. My girlfriend was like, yeah, but the symbolism. And I was like, that doesn't make it a good movie :|
Not that I hated it, but dull and mediocre fit it pretty well.

well it's your fault either way.
I like Donnie Darko.
But it's a very pretentious movie - or rather, the director thinks his movie is chock full of meaning when it really isn't. I listened to it with commentary once and I was amazed, because it's as if the guy doesn't get why people enjoy his movie (I guess that explains Southland Tales). He seeks to try and explain everything when many of the links are tenuous at best.
I think it only works as a superficial high school comedy with a bizarre edge. If you attempt to analyze it any further than that, it falls apart.
I locked the cage as well as I knew how [QUOTE="jlh47"]well it's your fault either way. Jandurin
You knew that was my FAVORITE BUNNY!! YOU DID THIS TO ME! LOOK WHAT I'VE BECOME!!
That's why I hate the movie! because it reminds me of him. SNUGGLES I MISS YOU!
Interesting. I will make sure never to watch the commentary. I would hate to have the movie ruined. :PBut it's a very pretentious movie - or rather, the director thinks his movie is chock full of meaning when it really isn't. The director's cut and/or deleted scenes do it too, since they try and explain things. I might be alone in this, but I don't think Donnie Darko works when it's explained, because the director's explanation is silly. Better left vague and up to the viewer to interpret.

I'm not sure if I've seen the Director's Cut or not. I don't think so, though.

I think you people just looked too hard for some underlying message, as opposed to just letting the movie soak in.You have your own opinion, but I personally think it was very evident that Richard Kelly thought the movie was leagues deeper than it actually was, and very craftily written and witty when it was neither. It was simply not this masterpiece that Kelly clearly thought it was.

It was simply not this masterpiece that Kelly clearly thought it was. homegirl2180Oh, that seemed pretty evident in the movie. Doesn't make it any less enjoyable in its own right.
I never let those who think they're artists interfere with my own interpretation. Probably why I never watch Director's Commentary. Only a few directors do I care what they think. Like Ridley Scott.
2001 A Space OddysseyLostProphetFLCL2001 is not pretentious. There was no point at which it tried to be something other than what it was.

Well the question at hand isn't how good th emovie is, it' show pretentious the movie is. And Donnie Darko is very pretentious. As far as its quality, I didn't hate it, but I did dislike it. I think all the hype left me with a bitter taste. Regardless, I don't usually watch commentaries except for some of my favourite movies... Pan's Labyrinth has a great commentary from Guillermo del Toro, however.
Well the question at hand isn't how good th emovie is, it' show pretentious the movie is. homegirl2180Yeah, you're correct. Though the topic seemed to have not just a pretentious basis, but a negative (as in dislike) connotation as well.
Anyhoo, the other guy said the director did indeed have pretentious aspirations when making Donnie Darko (which is silly, as it is obviously not deep, and it makes more sense NOT "deep"), so you're correct. I just didn't see it that way.

This. I love Stanley and just about all of his movies. But if there was any movie I could describe as pretentious - it's this one.
[QUOTE="Ninja-Hippo"]No Country For Old Men. It seems to acknowledge from start to finish that it's a dull, mediocre movie; but that's ok because "think of the symbolism!"Def_Jef88Couldnt agree more.
Lady in the Water. The director plays as the most important character...
Not only that, but the movie itself sucked, and so does all of his movies.
Def_Jef88
i agree...
magnolia.
crash.
and I just recently seen Babel, which is pretty pretentious
Boogie_J
THANK YOU TC! I agree 100% with u about crash...now if we could only get everyone else to see the truth :(

2001 was great i think. I can completely understand though why one could see it as being pretentious. But personally, i luved it to death! if you want pretentious, just watch "The Fountain"...wat utter trash -.-
I know I am going to get alot of hate for this, but I think that David Lynch is one of the most pretentious directors ever. Of all his movies I only liked Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man. Dont give me that Oh you just dont understand how deep and symbolic his films are crap, I just think that people overhype him so much they treat him like some kind of god. He is the Ayn Rand of the film world, pretentious in many ways, but idolized by a huge group of people who get together to analyze and discuss his latest ego trip. Film-Guy
Ayn Rand doesn't seem that pretentious to me :?
But yeah I can see how Lynch would come off as pretentious, I just love that one ... no two scenes in Mulholland Dr. Haven't seen Eraserhead yet.
It quite simply tries to be more than it actually is. crucifineI would say it would also be "thinks it is more than it actually is"
It can think it is without actually trying.
[QUOTE="Jandurin"]How come Lost in Translation isn't more popular in this thread?Boogie_J
never seen it yet, but how exactly was lost in translation pretentious?
oh, and I can't believe no one mentioned revolver yet. terrible movie.
It's pretentious in that it believes it has some sort of meaning. But it's really just a bunch of random scenes of an old man who likes young girls in Japan.I know I am going to get alot of hate for this, but I think that David Lynch is one of the most pretentious directors ever. Anyway, Dune was fantastic, and not at all pretentious.
Brick. I could barely understand what they were saying and didn't have a clue what was going on by the end.
I don't get people saying No Country For Old Men. Theres nothing really pretentious - the story is blatantly simple. Its mainly just a chase movie. Very suspensful and intense
brick, i couldnt agree more i actually had to switch the film off its so far up its own arse, also the van sant film about cobain last days, could probable mention few of his other films gerry and elephant but iv been put off watching either of them from what iv heard they are pointless.
and to people above, your right too much meaning is put into the matrix and fight club, fight club is still enjoyable though.worst case is people reading to much into **** that isnt there and come out with alot of pseudo intellectual B.S.
lost in translation i found inoffensive enough, not middle aged and bored enough to find it deep and meaningful.
