[QUOTE="mattbbpl"]

There are a variety of precautions BP could have taken to prevent the current issue, and they simply weren't followed.

Ninja-Hippo

Please name them.

Dude, BP had over 700 violations, pick one. It doesn't make sense for you to ask for mattbbpl to name the precautions if BP had already been cited time after time again.

I'm fine with BP having to pay to clean up their mess, it's this nonsense about criminal charges which i find ridiculous. A piece of equipment failed. There was nothing anyone could have done to prevent that whatsoever yet people seriously want a guy (or several) to go to prison? All they'll do is scapegoat some poor sucker who couldn't have done anything about it. Ninja-Hippo
Not the small guy, operator, etc, that would be scapegoating. The big heads of BP should be the ones held to that kind of punishment. Why? because that's the only way that the company as a whole would care enough about it. If they punish the little guy they don't care because they are replaceable, if they charge them some money they don't care because they make like 20 time more than that. But if you get the big guys running the thing the company as a whole suffers and so they feel their mistakes in a real way like they should.

It would have been smaller....less costly if they didn't have to drill so far down.LJS9502_basic

Yes you're right and I'm sure you want to make a point about shallow water drill regulationsbut look:they took that gamble to drill in deep waters, the government didn't make them do it. And you'll likely retort that regulation forced them to, but when you look at their production levels, was the risk worth the profit? They didn't even plan for this senario as if their system was infallible. There business would have plugged along nicely even without these additional deepwater wells.
