A 15-year-old New Mexico boy was "involved heavily in violent games" before he plotted and carried out the massacre of his parents and three siblings because he was "frustrated" with his mother, police said Tuesday.

Nehemiah Griego did not elaborate on a motive for the shocking crime, but he had plenty to say about his love for video games, including "Modern Warfare" and "Grand Theft Auto," authorities said.

"It was kind of what he was into and was quite excited as he got the opportunity to discuss that with investigators," Bernalillo County Sheriff Dan Houston said a news conference.
The teen, who will be arraigned in Albuquerque on Tuesday afternoon, began planning the murders a week ago, and his blood lust went beyond his family, police said.
He contemplated shooting up a local Walmart and killing his 12-year-old girlfriend's parents, Houston said.

The suspect sent the girl a photo of his dead mother after he shot her around 1 a..m, and he spent most of Saturday -- after ambushing his father at 6 a.m. and until he went to his church at 8 p.m. -- with her, officials said.

He said the teen was "very stern" and "unemotional" as he walked investigators through the cold-blooded executions.

He had four guns -- a .22 rifle with a 10-round ammunition holder, an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and two 12-gauge shotguns -- some of which had been purchased by his father's friends and sold to the dad privately, police said.

Court documents say that the teen envisioned dying in a firefight with law enforcement after the killings.

Instead, he spent the rest of the day with his girlfriend before he went to Calvary Church, where his father had once been pastor, to talk to someone he knew, Houston said.
A church security guard was driving the teen back to his house when he apparently had misgivings and called police, who went to the house and found the horrific scene.

Source.

We should arrest all who play CoD and GTA, just to be sure.

I played Doom II at the age of 8 and have enjoyed violent video games for almost a decade and a half... and I am a law abiding citizen who does not murder people. Mental illness was why this boy did what he did.

Meanwhile I've been playing violent video games since I was 4 (Wolfenstein 3d). Only violent thing I've done after puberty was defending another person. Some people are just crazy.

I've been playing violent games for years and I was one of the awkward and mostly quiet kids in high school who everyone thought was gonna shoot up the school. I don't have a gun. Kinda hard to pull off a school shooting with no gun, yes? Even if I did have a gun, I would have likely killed myself over killing 10 people and then myself. I wouldn't want to be known as a monster after death.

you can go **** yourself if you actually believe violent video games cause people to go shoot other people.

the problem lies within the individual and how they were raised. not what games they played.

Exactly. It's time we start blaming the perpetrator, instead of looking for scapegoats.

Notice how the kid loved his bible and his father was an ex-con preacher? I'm sure he was reading the old testament before commiting that crime.

To be honest, that's not proof of anything. There are lots of smokers who never get lung cancer or heart disease, yet we know smoking is a huge risk factor for both of those. Just because you havent had issues, doesnt mean that video games cant have some contribution to violence. However, conversely, the data just isnt there to prove it either.

But you know that it's affecting you. Just look at your teeth and go do some lab tests... there results will eventually show.

Now I've been playing games for about 15 years now... Never gotten into a fight, I can't even kill an ant! And I've been playing violent video games since I was 11, but I feel no urge of being violent. Hell, I actually avoid disputes. There you got a second opinion. Anyone else?

In FC3, you can carry four weapons plus a max of 12 grenades and 6 C4 charges.

This could definitely true. Too bad the Baby Boomers will continue blaming games because they're jealous that they never had them growing up. It's not our fault they grew up in a crappy time period.

Mercyful Fate is my favorite band and I don't really feel the need to sacrifice a newborn child in Satan's name.

Yes, most of us can be exposed to this kind of things and take them for what they are, but that doesn't change the fact that, small as it may be, there's a group of individuals that suffer from weird disorders that can be triggered by certain types of music, games, movies, TV shows, books and certain corners of the Interwebs. Whether society should do something about it or just power through each one of these massacres and, if there's something that could be done, what exactly it could be, is an entirely different issue, but that doesn't change the facts.

They always say "Violent games"... I love games. Sometimes the games I love have violence in them...sometimes they have no voilence in them what so ever...I always wonder if they actually mean "love for violence" rather than "love for violent games". I mean I love the GTA series but if you were to take away everything from series except for the combat/ voilence and the graphics, I'm pretty sure I'd hate the game(s).

I wonder how many people on OT are going to realize and admit to the game that the federal government and mainstream media are playing. Now almost any shooting makes national news, and video games are bad. Now they're going after your pastime, your passion. They'll keep changing the focus and going after various different things that they want to control or do away with.

The media has been reporting shootings for decades. Do you know why? Because they're tragic and they sell.

This is what I hate about arguments involving violent video games, it seems no one on the side of video games even bothers to argue intelligently. I feel like they're constantly arguing against strawmen, whether it be a comment like this, jumping down the throats of people who just want to have a conversation on the issue and are not necessarily advocating specific action, or going on eloquent tangents that don't actually address any of the concerns the other side raises. I do think there is a large segment of people on the other side who are just prudes and/or don't understand video games and video gamers because of a generational gap, but I think to say that the pro-video game crowd is combative would be putting it mildly. For as much of a lack of understanding as there is on the other side, there's equally a lack of wanting to be understood on this side.

Yeah I agree. The gaming fanbase generally isn't open to criticsms or some curiousity into the matter and usually over reacts to them.

Also I do believe there might be a link between real life violence and video games, I'm just not sure what it is yet. The fact that many games use violence as a form of satisfying feedback or a reward for say following a QTE might say something about the general fanbase.

I'd assume he loved the violent video games because he was violent himself. The games didn't make him violent

[QUOTE="Zeviander"] Mental illness was why this boy did what he did.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but what are you basing that claim on?

Probably. But I'm not going to claim that allowing a violent child to play violent games isn't going to have any effect.

lol @ 12 year old girlfriend. But seriously, who cares if he liked video games? If his outlet wasn't a game, it might have been animals, other kids with severe bullying, or drawing gruesome pictures. This kid is mentally disturbed, he's not just violent because he likes to run down hookers in a video game. I damn love running down pixel-hookers, but I wouldn't do it in real life. This kid is screwed up, he's not screwed up because of games. That's like saying he eats meat so he must be a sadistic murderer because he takes pleasure in chewing on the flesh of animals killed for his consumption...
