Depends on the game... multiplayer shooters or RPG's I always have music playing. In games that have a story to pay attention too, I won't listen to music.
For some good ol' zombie slaughter, I think Du Hast works very well. I just remember Frank mashing some zombie's face with an electric guitar, and my buddy's iPod plugged into the Xbox.
For the blitzkrieg into Poland (or just any WW2 Call of Duty) Rammstein also works.
But the only game that I actually shut off the music and plug in my Zune is GTAIV. Cruising over the bridge and listening to Fake Empire (by The National) and watching the sunset.
Depends on what kind of game I'm playing.
Like, if I'm playing a racing game, then I set a long playlist and just drive while listening to music.
But if I'm listening to anything story driven, then putting on my own playlist is an insult to the supposed artistic integrity that went into the game. I wouldn't watch Aliens while listening to Bob Dylan, and I wouldn't watch Platoon while listening to Green Day. The hell with that. The music was chosen to enhance the emotional and dramatic impact. It's not just there just so the player can have something to hear.
Depends on the game, but I'm usually listening to stuff like Blind Guardian, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Tyr, Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth et cetera.
Depends, if the game has a good soundtrack I'll just listen to that. If not I put my itunes on shuffle, tis funny when I'm killing people in Prototype and the song goes from a Cradle of Filth one to a Spice Girls one, very jarring. :P
For the most part I never play music while I am gaming. Usually anything other then the in game music distracts me. If I do happen to play music, which is rare, I do so when I am either playing multiplayer games or some free roaming game like Saints Row and Grand Theft Auto. The music is usually some form of metal. :P
thank you for this post... i'm 33 years old (well in 2 days i will be) i listen to a wide varity of genres of music from rock, country, techno and classical... heck i even enjoy some of the "big band" era stuff... but the bands you listed here... oddly enough, i don't know of. lol so again thank you, something for me to check out! but me, i have, as stated before been a very hardcore loyal fan of anything trent reznor does. but i do like ministry, older skinny puppy, kmfdm, thrill kill kult, lords of acid and such. i just always related more to reznors' lyrics than any other band/musician out there. i've strayed away from the rap thing though... i'm not hating on it... it just doesn't do it for me anymore lol like when i was 18 and jamming bone thugs hahahaha. BUT!!! if interested i would like to mention a band i have been listening to for about a year now. it's a 3 girl band. mainly just 2 with one drummer who i believe does keyboard and synths... but the band is Robots In Disguise. now, chich bands haven't ever really been my thing besides tori amos (always love tori amos) but robots in disguise are actually really great! look up the video for their song on youtube titled "The Sex Has Made Me Stupid"! lol it's great!Depends on the game, but I'm usually listening to stuff like Blind Guardian, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Tyr, Dimmu Borgir, Amon Amarth et cetera.

This. If the soundtrack is a score or important to teh game I just listen to the game. however if its uneccassery(fighting, driving) I listen to baseball or sports talk.i don't know... about in game music... some of it's ok i guess... IMO if it's more on the Industrial rock side without lyrics.
but alot of times i would rather have the music turned off and only here the in game sounds.
but thank you all for your posts here... i have actually read quite a few bands mentioned i've not heard of and will mos def check out!

Usually this. If it's an RPG or game with a deep story I won't listen to music, but I will listen to music if it's a multiplayer game, an action game (Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc.), or an RTS.Depends on the game... multiplayer shooters or RPG's I always have music playing.
