Everyone loves familiarity- everyone loves to know (and expect) what note is coming next in a tune they are listening to. If you are like me, you listen to a pop/rock/metal tune and you just know what progression is going to come next. You expect it, and more often than not, you are right, but if you are wrong, you are pissed off because it didn't go as planned. Well you are the sucker, because not all music is expected to play out just as you planned, for if it was, you may as well have f*^&%(& wrote it.

Music is supposed to ******** It's not supposed to do ANYTHING!!! It is what it is, and if it chooses to tell an audio story that is unlike anything you have ever heard before, because it breaks all conventions and just chooses to tell a story based on audible notes and tones alone that are entirely based on ones own interpretation, then deal with it, enjoy it, and draw your own conclusions!

Artists that choose to pave their own way with disregard to ignorant convention are the likes of Iannis Xenakis, Camille Saint-Saens, Edgar Varese, and Anton Webern to name just a few, as they chose to weave an elegant tapestry of audible goodness all their own, and if if you don't understand it, that is your problem, not theirs.

I could give a crap less about pretentious ephemeral nonsense like Green F*&^!& Day or My C^%&*#!^ Romance.

Is it just a juvenile wonton ignorance that makes these bands so popular?

Is there no accounting for for taste, style, or substance?!

What has no substance...those bands or the music? I hate alot of the new generation of music, Opeth, Bullet for my Valintine (or whatever) blah blah, but thats just me. MCR and Green Day are actualy alot better than some other bands out there, at least some of there songs are tolerable.

Lol, you see, thats the problem with teen's now a days, they view alot of mainstream music to be "sell-outs" or to be bubble gum rock when in realitly alot of the time its the other way around. A couple of years back people said mainstream sucks, i wanna listen to this underground/indie music and be a rebel and be cool, well that cool "rebel" music became so populare it became what is now called screamo, or mainstream alternatve, bands like Fall out Boy, MCR, and others made it even bigger. Now that the music industries noticied how easy it is to lure the young ones in like that they made most bands sound the same, like some sort of factory of robots that play the same crap on the radio, which is why i hate bands like opeth, bullet for my valintine (or whatever) because there just some commercial band that sing with no lyrical depth, no emotion what so ever vocal wise and the instruments are always either some fast rif that sounds hard or the same guitar sound over-and over again. Rock music is dieing, and its thanks to this generation.

The "bands" I quoted aren't "bands" at all, and this is precisely my problem. The fundamental problem I have with "other people" (youth) is that they inadvertently "latch-on" to iconoclastic rubbish to "get them through" penultimate periods in the defining stages in their lives, and these icons with which they latch on to are fundamentally CRAP!!! Unfortunately they are most often too juvenile to realise it. In time they will grow up (as I hope you will) and interpret music in an entirely different light- for what it is and not for what juvenile "douchebag" wants you to see it as, and certainly not for the record sales it will bring them.

I despise modern rock/pop/soul/rap for the commercial and arrogant pretentious element it induces on what music is and should be. We DON'T listen to music for the sake of idol worship or capitolism, or because some clown dropped an f-bomb or a primative 5th-note powerchord, it is because we appreciate what they have contributed to the music scene without care for pretense or megalomania...

people musical interpretation can differ from different people as it is an art which means how ever shallow you think something is there may be an underlining meaning. Why don't you give me a couple of bands you like and we'll see how great your tatse is and if it isn't garbage. by despinsing all forms of modern music you are generalizing, while i don't enjoy msot music on the radio i enjoy music which has been made in this century without having to look back to the 80s and 90s to see what "real music"was like.

who do you say latches onto these bands because alot of people do but again generalizing. not all bands think how you think they do, jsut because they sign with a major label doesn't mean they have sold out.

i feel bad for you because you have closed up so much msuic to you because of your narrow minded views.

These days I mostly only listen to what would be called "world music", "ECM artists", and "classical"...uh, classical...simply because I am absolutely sick of pretentuous pri&ks and their commercially endorsed c*ck rock sensibiltiies.

O boy hear comes another one. I dont think i ever said rock music is dead but there's no denying that its dieing. I mean when you have to look for a decent, at least a decent band, that doesnt mean that its dieing to anyone els?. When's the last time anyone has heard of a rock album that was absolutly fantastic and thats from this generation. I can easily say that there hasn't been many. If you wanna see things the way they are then thats great but in reality rock is going down hill.

That, and I simply don't care for the shallow-minded empty pseudo-lyrical self-absorbed content that almost all pop/rock/metal bands have had to offer going all the way back to the seventies.

again very shelterd of what music has to offer here is a few bands which you would probably classify as commercial crap but have helped creat interesting and good music.

Modest Mouse, The Pixies, Ghostface killa, Smashing pumpkins, Motion city soundtrack, Bloc party, Suburban legends.

this is jsut a small taste of mostly really good music from Alternative, grundge, indie, ska, hip hop. music doesn't always have to be deep and meaningful all the time and is open to interpratation. Just because music can appeal to a large audience doesn't mean it is commercial crap.

All the rock albums i consider to be fantastic were relesed after 1999. I don't consider it to be bad thing that there is so much sub genre variety that only a fraction can be displayed for the mainstream.

Thats great that you find all your favorite albums pass 1990's but why has the music industry have to circum to just one tiny bit of it. As of now, im huge on indie bands, thats all ive been listening to when it comes to the newer generations, and ive been satisfied with great bands like The Strokes, Silversun Pickups, and interpole just to name a few but as the great Billy Corgan said, rock music has become an emotionless outlet of robots who care nothing about the music they write, and thats if they write any at all. There hasn't been a musical revolution since the 90's and imo there hasnt been fantastic music mainstream wise and indie wise as it has been in the generations before.

Music is a discipline and should have structure. Trying to be trendy and edgy by making random notes is not talent...nor listenable.

If every band in the world would use those same "listenable" riffs and same precise rhythms then the world of music would be very boring.
