[QUOTE="peterw007"][QUOTE="sSubZerOo"] As I said absolutely NOTHING, and they are smack dab in the middle of a secular nation.. To suggest that they some how compare to a real country with millions of people is absurd.. sSubZerOo
An ~832-man city state is still more than nothing...and the Catholic Church has over a billion members worldwide.
The Pope still has incredible power and influence in the world, but you're right that the actual territory the Catholic theocracy directly controls is extremely small.
And yet again what they say is not law to their members.. How bout we look at the time period when the Catholic Church actually wielded power like a government.. Its not pretty.. Theocraciecs are not good, they are controlled by a fanatical elite and pretty much do not value personal liberties, democracy etc etc.. Its funny too because the MIddle East in many areas was going down social reform in which countries like the US prevented this.. Iran is the poster child for this sad state of affairs.. Mosadeq was a moderate socialist and democratically elected president of Iran.. After he kicked out the British and nationalized their oil, the US conviently kicked him out of power for being a "supposed" communist and put into power the brutal and corrupt Shah.. The Shah asystematically wiped out ever force he thought was a threat, meaning mainly Cold War related ones, such as the intellectuals and social labor movements.. The one movement he did not deem as a threat, and proved his down fall was the increasing religious fanatacism growing within the region. Oh, I completely agree.
Religion should never, ever, ever interfere with government on any level whatsoever.
And a government controlled by religion is a fundamentally backwards one, regardless of what the religion actually is.

I was just saying that the Pope still has a ton of influence.
He goes to countries and people cheer at him in the streets.
Every comment he makes is reported on all major news sources.

American news organizations spent weeks talking about that American who became a Catholic cardinal.
Whether you like it or not, the Catholic Church still has tremendous influence, even if they can't directly control people or make laws outside of Vatican City.
