[QUOTE="Lonelynight"]I don't know why the customers has to tip the waiters. Why don't they just raise the price of the food and pay their employee more? Must be a western thing. Vapor115
TIP actually means "to insure promptness" and was coined many years ago in restuarants WAY back. The idea was actually started by customers, and the tip was origionally placed on the table BEFORE the table was even greeted. It was basically someone's down-payment on good fast service. The highest tippers always got the best service. Regrettably, this is no longer the case- tips are left after the fact and often do not reflect the quality of service, but instead quantity of purchase.
In a modern economy, it's kind of weird that servers are required to hold the customers service and food hostage. I know what you mean about dumb people as I've worked in different jobs in the service industry my whole life. I tip well, I always give a minimum 15% unless everything went horribly like food was forgotten, no refills etc.I don't know what your hourly wage might be, but my brother worked in a Sonic for a while as a cook and even though the cooks and kitchen crew were in the back slopping grease and fries, the waitresses regularly maybe 2-3 times what the kitchen guys made. I've never worked in a restaurant myself, so I don't know what the kitchen crew makes, but from what I've heard from others, the bartenders and servers always make above and beyond what they do. They should get paid more to deal with the crazies, I'm not saying that. I guess my point is to keep it in perspective and realize that all work sucks.
