Don't be a server.
Somewhere along the line, you've thought to yourself, "Why am I doing this? Couldn't I make more money elsewhere?" The answer is yes. The sad truth to this is the fact that people expect to be served by their server. When most people go to a restaurant, sit down with other people and friends, and start talking and relaxing, they aren't thinking about their server unless he/she is cute.
The reason I chose not to be a server were for the same reasons that the rant listed. I can't tolerate that kind of human interaction. I would go insane. I don't know how servers do it at all. Being satisfied with half of the minimum wage on top of "tips" horrifies me. Now, if they bumped it up to minimum wage, and tips were given up or cut by a percent, would that be more appropriate? I think so.
On that same note, when you make upwards of $100-$150 on a good night, is that fair?
Being a server means taking the good with the bad. You chose this job. You have every right to leave or ask to be placed somewhere else. Would a different job within the restaurant be a better fit?
On a more personal note, I typically leave a 35% tip gratuity. That also means that when I sit down and order a coffee, I'm probably not going to leave a 5$ tip.
