My mom bought me roses for my birthday

I see nothing wrong with what you did. While some people criticise you for returning the "gift" (personally, I'd break out laughing if my mother did that to me because there's no way she would unless it was a joke), I criticise your mother for not knowing better.

I would admit that it would be a weird gift to have especially if your a guy, but i wouldve shown my appreciation to my mother and just accepted them, and be thankful she at least got me something.

It's wierd, but she's your mom. Giving them back was unneccisary. You could've just said thankyou, and thrown them out once she left.
