Damn. I know most people on OT love death metal, but all of these lists seem to be confined to that genre. Are there really that many incredible death metal albums released each year that they eclipse all other noteworthy releases in other genres?Cherokee_Jack
Its all opinion based and the majority of people on OT seem to like Death Metal, so yes.

Look at my list? I'm one of those metalheads who hate death metal :P So I'm not sure if I would still be considered a metalhead...

Yeah, but those all seem to be black metal. Aren't there any plain old heavy metal groups around?

1. Coldplay - Viva La Vida 2. The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely 3. Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night to be honest nothing else is worthy of a mention this year imo.

Well, they're folk/viking metal, which is another niche subgenre I don't care about. All the metal being done today seems to be either death, black, viking, prog, goth, or some combination of those. Nothing like the good old glam and power metal groups.

I find it sort of odd to put these in order, so really only my number one is where I'm certain it belongs. 1. Nas - Untitled 2. N.E.R.D. - Seeing Sounds 3. T.I. - Paper Trail 4. Kanye West - 808's & Heartbreak [img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/d/dd/808nheartbreakcover.jpg/200px-808nheartbreakcover.jpg[/im 5. Ludacris - Theater of the Mind 6. The Roots - Rising Down 7. AZ - Undeniable 8. Cold Play - Viva la Vida 9. Ice Cube - Raw Footage 10. Bun B - II Trill I'll mention John Legend's "Evolver" and Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" though. I enjoyed those albums... And I'm sure Common's "Universal Mind Control" will make my top 10 before the year's out.

I could name at least 50 good albums from this year. :? I can't make a definite top 10 list yet though, because I've yet to get some significant releases from this year. :(

Gotta say I disagree, but considering your music tastes are caught in the early-mid 90's, it's not surprising. I mean, if you're looking for something new that sounds just like all that old stuff, you probably would call it a rip-off of the above artists. Not that there are many bands doing the grunge sound these days. I mean, I like Kyuss, Tool, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and RatM but I can't say that I'd have any of those albums ahead of the top 50 of the last 5 years.

This is especially true. There used to be a day when there was a decent flow of good music on the radio and on TV, but that day has long since passed due to labels putting out models/actresses with template-esque, overproduced, generic albums/songs instead. It's cheaper to sign an "artist" for a cheap, 2 album deal and then toss them away for a new similar deal with a different "artist" than have a 2 album deal that generates a lot of popularity, and then they have to pay oodles of cash to the artists to sign them on for longer term.

The only people who think modern music sucks are the people who aren't looking hard enough for the good stuff.

These aren't in order, but some albums that came out this year that I really loved are:
Stay Positive by The Hold Steady
Heretic Pride by The Mountain Goats
Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust by Sigur Ros
This Will Destroy You by This Will Destroy You
The Hawk is Howling by Mogwai
The New Year by The New Year
13 Blues for Thirteen Moon by A Silver Mt. Zion

That's not 10, but whatever.

i just stopped listening to new music. Tool, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age are still putting out albums though. Also, Fu Manchu is an excellent band, but their albums get old fast. So I either just keep listening to my old cd's, which kind of sucks, and i just hope that more original bands start up. also, i've been checking out some rap music, whcih i never though i would do. not gangster rap, but early 90's rap like KRS-One, Mos Def, etc... but it lacks the talent, i just like the lyrics.

2008 seriously ruled hard. Great stuff from everywhere.

Record of the year:

Nouns

One of the coolest bands around today. Dudes are awesome, don't miss themin your city, responsible for one of the best weekends in my life. Pretty much the definitive record for the new american underground scene. Dig it.

Deerhunter-Microcastle
Microcastle

Deerhunter get much less weird but stay awesome with their latest release. Anthems about being buried alive for pleasure.

Aerosols-3rd EP

Aerosols are one of the most pissed bands existing in hardcore today. No tuff guy breakdowns, no scene jocking. Straight ahead f-ed up pissed hardcore.

Cult Ritual-2nd EP

Cult Ritual is another seriously pissed hardcore band, another youth attack band too. Youth Attack had an awesome year. Need to check out that failures LP, but it's totally sold out. If you can hook me up: hook me up.

Skeleton

Kind of a weird full length because it's way less noisey than a lot of their other stuff but still way worth checking out. Good songs, solid dudes. Played a weirdo tour with Diplo this year. Weird and awesome. Kinda like this band. Get down on it.

Emeralds and Aaron Dilloway-Under Pressure

This cassette never fails to weird me way out. Drone dudes Emeralds and ex-wolf eyes tape lord Aaron Dilloway conspire to send you to planets that don't exist unless you're in some sort of extreme drug induced haze. I can't tell you what this tape sounds like but it always ends with me going "WTF just happened?" Awesome.

Lots more records and tapes I need to write up. Such a good year. Still have a ton to get to too. I'll be digging 2k8 well into 2k9000.

I haven't bought many albums from this year so this isn't an official list but Becoming The Archetype, Meshuggah, The Faceless, Origin, Psychocriptic, After the Burial, Testament, Arsis, The Acacia Strain, and Unearth all put out good albums this year. Sorry for lack of album names.

Grunge was just a big heroin cartel. The labels that put out albums by pearl jam, nirvana, and alice in chains, etc were all in on it. Tool is a band for ugly people that try hard to feel like they "matter". Seriously, Kurt Cobain killed himself so we wouldn't have to deal with this crap anymore. Get out of MTV in 93.

I've been meaning to get this album for a while. I tried to have my local record store special order it for me only to find out that the vinyl was canceled. Was bummed. I'm still stoked on Grinderman from last year though. I've heard about a new Grinderman record in 2k9. Psyched.

I've been meaning to get this album for a while. I tried to have my local record store special order it for me only to find out that the vinyl was canceled. Was bummed. I'm still stoked on Grinderman from last year though. I've heard about a new Grinderman record in 2k9. Psyched.

The new Bad Seeds album sounds kinda similar to the Grinderman album, its more guitar based in the way that Grinderman was. I am really looking forward to a new Grinderman album, I loved the last one. I even saw nick cave live this year:D He played an amazing show.

Probably for the best.

I tried to listen to them recently and I didnt really get their hype, they sound very generic to me. Not the worst metal I have heard, but not the best by far.

There are still some amazing bands, you just dont look hard enough for them.

Film-Guy

oh..i look. but i have not been able to find a single band that i like.

Well you like Tool, so I recommend Porcupine Tree, Spocks beard, and The Dear Hunter. See what you think of them.

Worst post of the thread? Probably.

sorry, but if you're like me and actually have good taste in music....then you would agree that there have been no good albums in a long time because current music sucks.

Get out of MTV in 93.

no they weren't all on it, some were. pearl jam was never into drugs heavily, and not heroine. and the best music ever created comes from drugs. drugs are a huge part of it, and at least the grunge bands weren't posers, they were completely original. more than you can say about most bands. and no, tool is not a band for ugly people. tool is a band for people who want to listen to some of the most technical drumming, amazing guitar, and mind blowing vocals in music. danny carey alone has more talent than probably any band you listen to...unless you listen to Rush. kurt cobain killed himself because he hated his fans and he couldn't get out of his drug addiction. what crap are you talking about? and i'm not stuck in mtv 93, i was 4 in 93. however, it's the only music i can listen to because it doesn't suck and it's not fake. if something better came along, i would gladly listen to it, but it hasn't and probably never will.

I never really got into grunge much except for Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, and Silverchair. I much prefer the brit pop movement of the 90s.

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. Music doesn't come from drugs. 99% of muscians who did drugs were just as amazing and creative before they had substance abuse problems.

haha, come on man led zep, rush, tool, primus, the doors, alice in chains, sublime. these bands were all about drugs. it was a primary part of their music. i don't think it effects their abilities, but it does effect their perceptions, creativity, and other things. so i think it really does help a lot.

You'd probably like Dinosaur Jr. Probably. I'd recommend more, but I'm 100% unsure of what you'd like aside from the grunge sound. Like, if you'd enjoy shoe-gazey rock like Calla, or gritty & weird stuff like Menomena, or bands relatively unknown to North Americans such as Placebo, or Envy, who've been doing their own things for ages. I guess I just did recommend though. So I guess Placebo, Dinosaur jr, Calla. Menomena(takes a while to get going) is a definite stretch. :P Envy is a hardcore band, and I'd imagine they're a stretch as well. XD

Oasis was the most generic of the groups, but yeah they count. The best though are bands like Blur, Stone Roses, Pulp, Kula Shaker, The La's, Supergrass, bond, embrace, echobelly, cast, silver sun, blackbox recorder, and the verve.
