Couple of things:
America does NOT have the best health care in the world. In fact, we are behind quite a many countries. France is rated the best and they ironically enough have nationalized health care.
Yes no one is denied EMERGENCY care. That means people with painful, chronic, non life threatening illnesses or mental illnesses cannot get the medication they need because they can't afford it. Senior citizens also have a hard time affording the medications they need. And for those who are uninsured and still receive emergency care, they still must pay OUTRAGEOUS bills. I had some real crap insurance once and had to go to the ER because I couldn't stop throwing up and was suffering from severe dehydration. For just ONE IV bag and anti nausea medication I had to shell out $1500 AFTER my insurance. A bag of distilled water and pepto cost me $1500. $500 of that alone was just the doctor bill...and all he did was look at me chart and say "yup. your sick and dehydrated."
And for those who don't pay their bills, the tax payers have to pick up the slack so it's not like it would increase taxes that much either.
The only draw back would be the waiting lists which are like how you described.
