For a long while now, I noticed there constantly was dog poop on my front lawn. I don't have a dog and even after I cleaned up the dog poop, the next day there would be more dog poop. Everyday it would be like this.

One day, I happen to catch a dog sitting on my front lawn taking poop. When I went outside, I saw the dog owner standing a distance away watching.

Long story short, it seems the dog owner is a neighbor a couple of houses down the street and that person is purposely training the dog to poop on the lawn. I had spoken with a family member, and it seems the dog owner was caught doing it in the past so this is an ongoing problem.

Talking to the dog owner about it seems pointless since it is obvious they are doing this on purpose. Can something be done legally about this problem? Maybe something involving the police? I live in California if that helps.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Confront the owner. It's a pain in the ass to make time for it, I know, but it has to be done. Set some surveillance and monitor for a few days to see if there is a specific time or time-frame when he does that. Then confront him and tell him you have him on video. I'm sure there is a fine if you don't clean up your dog's shit.

@rnd10: I don't live in california, but where I live in europe not cleaning up dog shit is fined.

Training your dog to shit in someone lawn, well that's just plain harrassment and will be followed by a restraining order.

I know europe ain't the usa, but I can't imagine you ain't got laws for that over there. If they don't, I suggest you start eating fatty foods and lay a good one on his lawn (since you got no dog)

@SOedipus: Thanks for the reply.

As I already mentioned, this has been happening everyday for the longest time and we caught the dog owner watching a couple of times already while the dog was taking a poop.

When I caught this happening last time, the dog owner was standing in a place that was as far from my house as possible while being hidden from any of my house windows so they could not be seen. It is obvious they know and don't care. If I mentioned this to them, it is highly likely they would not care and argue, or deny it even though we caught them, or pretend to agree then keep doing it.

I will try to set up some cameras or something to catch it on video. I don't think they come at the same time, though. When I caught them the last time, I checked the next day at the same time and did not see them.

@commander: Haha, thanks for the reply.

Does anybody have any advice where I can find the dog laws in my area in California, since I don't own pets?

First I would talk with the dog owner. If it continued then I would talk to the police.

First you talk to the owner as a token gesture, as a "for the record" to cover your bases. Reasonably, you have nothing to lose and it shows that you tried to be an adult and be civil about things.

Then you go to the police, "hey I talked to him and yet he continued to bring his dog to defecated in my lawn" and take it from there.

This asshole is an inconsiderate fool and from the look of it you are totally in the right so fight on.

A general google search shows that in most areas of California, not cleaning up after your dog is punishable by fine.

Literally every single person I know that owns a dog carries bags with them when they walk them because they walk them so their dog will shit, and they need to pick the shit up because A.) they're decent people, and B.) they can get fined.

Do everything in your power to catch this piece of shit dog shit placer of shit and punish them.

Los Angeles Municipal Code for Dog Defecation - $20 fine per act

San Francisco Pooper Scooper Law - $320 fine if you refuse to clean up on private or public property. Furthermore, you must carry a bag with you or be subject to fine.

This is why I don't own a dog. This and a million other reasons. I love dogs but Jesus...

I would call animal control every time the thing comes in your yard. Just say it's a stray that won't go away.

In the UK its pick up or pay up. Its normally a max fine of £1000 if caught but no one ever does apart from me stepping in the shiit.Where I live I followed some one home once what let there dog just go in street. I was going to go back and pick it up with a spade or something and post it threw letterbox. But thought I would either get beat up or get done more then owner if caught. Greee lol.

The dog is not at fault. Poor doggies doesn't know any better. The one at fault is the idiot owner. Lets skip the dog irritate plan, and skip over to getting the owner to be more responsible. Ey skipper !

I had a neighbor screw with me and I became his worst nightmare. I'm the last person someone wants to mess with in my neighborhood. Screw with me and I know 1001 ways to screw with you back.

Well in California, in most if not all cities, you have to clean up after your dog- its a health code. Next time you see the dog shitting on your lawn kick it in the face.

Yea bad owner...don't do anything to harm the dog..not his fault...if you see the owner next time just confront him about it. If he continues to be a dick, get photo/video then call the council or dog catcher. :P

But maybe he should kick the owner...

You know you can save all the poops he did in your yard, and place it in front of his door. Film it, that would be great.

do you live in a community w/ an HOA or rules or anything? if so they can be issued fines.

or you can collect it in a paper bag, put it on their doorstep and light it on fire

I in no way endorse this but I'll tell you how my grandfather years ago dealt with this. He put exlax wrapped in hamburger balls out in his yard. His reasoning was if the dog is going to **** in his yard it's going to **** in everyone else's yard as well. I wouldn't recommend doing this but it's an interesting story.

Personally I'd check your local laws because it might be illegal and if so take video of the dog and owner and then call the police. You could also collect the poop and wait and leave on the neighbor's porch, I wouldn't set it on fire because that might be illegal.
