Low broadband caps in Canada put that country close to third-world countries, and overage charges almost amount to human rights violations: Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos blasted broadband caps and usage-based-billing employed by Canadian ISPs during an investor event Thursday afternoon

Isn't there unlimited packages in Canada?

Also, what's the max throughput you could get there?

If people think that data caps are almost a human rights violation then it's only a matter of time before people start calling for the arrest of 95% of cell phone companies. Also opens them up for a new round of first world memes.

Unless you are an extremely light net user, I see bandwidth as one of those things that should never be restricted. The amount of data I use per day would make me poor as hell if I had my bandwidth metered. There have been days that I have downloaded 50+GB. I would say that I am good for at least 10-15GB per day easily.

That article is a year old BTW.

Most low end plans offer poor speeds and bandwidth, like a "lite" plan would be $35 with 3Mbps down and a 25GB cap.  But now there are other companies that offer much better rates to compete with the "Big 3", and their entry service is 6Mbps down with a 300GB cap for $30 and you can add an unlimited option for $10.

As for speeds, we can get up to 250Mbps up and down, but that depends on how much you wanna pay.

Things are getting better.

Agreed. Everything is a human right anymore. This (netflix quote) is also a hilarious, self-serving quote.

It says "almost a Human Rights violation"  All they needed to say was Canadians are being totally hosed hoser's.  There's a reason why Bell Canada, Telus, and Roger's don't want Verizon in Canada.

I pay $60 a month for 10 megabits/s and a 125gb cap. I feel royally screwed when I see what people get for the same price in other countries.

I pay $60 a month as well, but I get 50 mb/s download and unlimited bandwidth. Non U.S. companies really need to ditch the bandwidth cap and up the speeds. I really wished I was in Kansas City though so I could get a 1000 mb/s download package with no bandwidth restrictions for only $70 a month. Google needs to hurry up and expand their services. They will even give you free internet access at basic speeds so long as you pay the set up fee. More companies need to follow google's lead.

I live in Florida and pay $30 a month for 25Mb/s down 5Mb/s up with no cap. Only downside is a ton of wireless interference in my apartment complex, it works fine when using the 5Ghz network but not so much when using 2.4Ghz. I'm using an Asus RT-AC66R which worked great when I lived in a house with a large yard, but now I live in an apartment with my girlfriend. Guess I'm not used to having 30+ routers with 4 bar signals in a 100ft radius. I can imagine bandwidth caps are horrible, but to be honest I maybe download 40gb a month if that. I think the people who exceed 100gb monthly are downloading too many torrents or watching excessive amounts of porn...

Or they live with other regular internet users. Just think, if you lived with two people who use the internet as much as you do then you'd exceed a 100gb/125gb cap.

human rights violation?

Still, for being tech companies, ISPs are incredibly outdated, back-asswards companies with policies that often seem to go against the very technology they promote and offer.

Poor customer support, frequent outages, and borderline monopolies in many areas are all too common, not to mention they plain don't often service in more rural areas (which, frankly, are not that rural...we are talking about a mile or two outside city limits).

If 3 people were sharing a connection I'd assume they would pay for more than the cheapest option. I live with my girlfriend so even with both of us it's only around 50gb a month.

I currently live in Canada (not for much longer) and i have to check a website every day to make sure im not going over my cap, its a complete joke! I wouldn't mind so much if it was cheap but it aint! I dont think it's a "human rights" issue though, the price of cheese on the other hand IS a human rights violation!

Lawmakers need to pass new antitrust laws and enforce already existing ones, after all telecoms also control cable TV, and they're more than capable of providing faster internet bandwidths and don't need badwidth caps. For instance take the data stream that cable TV utilizes. A digital channel can take upward of 20 megabits/second of data which is like 2.5 megabytes per second, calculate that to how much that comes out to per month that's upward of 6400GB, for one TV. And lets not take multiple cable units in a household out of the equation. Basically, it's bullshit meant to milk you, you could easily provide faster internet service effortlessly if they wanted I'm sure of it. Anyhow, it's probably worth noting that an optimized signal probably uses a variable bitrate over a constant one, plus broadcasters will probably multicast their signals to lower bitrates for various stations, lets say conservatively the bitrate can be reduced to an average of 5 megabits/second for 720p1080i digital HDTV channel, then that makes it still 1600GB of data per month per HDTV cable box, and households can take upwards of 5 simultaneously running boxes to my knowledge, so that's like anywhere from 8000 GB of data per 5 person household per month to 32000 GB at the highest broadcasting bitrate. So why aren't cable providers providing faster internet service then(?), obviously, the data infrastructure exists to the point that if people could get data speeds for their internet the same way they get it for digital television then cable providers would be outbid by startup internet companies bundling channel packages at cheaper and cheaper rates to the point that the cable companies profits would flatline by set top boxes people can pick up from Best Buy or Walmart or GameStop for maybe $100 or people could just use their Xbox Ones or PS4's. THIS IS WHY WE CANNOT HAVE NICE THINGS!!

Even though my internet is better than most of the countries it still f*cking blows when compared to even parts of the US (which has pretty crappy internet too). The caps are high enough you'd have to put effort in to reach them but they're still there and the speeds aren't exactly impressive and every few months the provider comes up with some new scam.

I have 5GB cap ($10 per GB over) and get speeds AT BEST 500kbs. 1/2 MB DL speed for $40 a month because all companies refuse to support my area (hell the cable box that supplies the area next to us is 2 houses from me).

We have 3 companies that basically have a monopoly and don't even try to compete. They're gouging us because they can. the CRTC had to step in a few months ago to basically force them to cap roaming fees and a bunch of other ridiculous fees they imposed (along with removing 3 year contracts). If it wasn't for us being more Liberal we would have even worse services. Just look at car prices as another example, we pay around 50% more for our cars AND those are the ones we build.

There are companies that have caps. Cox (the one I use) has a 300GB cap for the speed I have but it's either them or 3 mbps internet with Centurylink. At least my phone is still unlimited.

Not sure about the other 2 major ISPs, but Bell does offer unlimited internet.  Unfortunately it costs and extra $10/month, but its better then nothing.  Where I live there is also the ability to go with TekSavvy, they offer both capped  (300 GB/month) internet or unlimited.  The downside to this is that they are just using unused ports from Rogers/Bell, so its possible that they will just disconnect you if Rogers/Bell decide to use that port.  So there is the ability to have unlimited internet, its just neither are the greatest solution.

At home we have an old plan (10+ years) that thankfully is unlimited, and just got bumped up to 6 Mb/s from the previous 2.5Mb/s.
