As a result of these factors the Solutrean (European originating) Native Americans were either partly absorbed by the newcomers or were substantially obliterated by them either physically or through competition for resources.Independentuk

If this is true it is a major discovery. I'll wait for more info but I'm still a little skeptical.

Doesn't this have to do with the existence of the land bridge?

Because that's a pretty old theory(?).

Considering that the land masses were all joined together centuries ago and began to drift apart during the Great Thaw when the Ice Age came to an end then it is no surprise that early humans migrated all over the planet and remained on the continents as they drifted apart over the centuries.

Still centuries, a lot of them. It isn't exactly hard to realise that early humans remained on the lands that would become known as America and be the natives there, and considering that sea going travel was still in the early stages then contact between all of the developing cultures of the species wasn't great until communication improved.

North America was only connected to Asia, and even at that only by a narrow strip in the Bering Strait. That's a lot of walking for someone from Europe.

Back then humans weren't so bothered by long walks, it wasn't like they could call for a taxi or wait for a bus, or catch a train or even book a flight. If the other lands promised better food, hunting potential and more fertile lands then they would just migrate.

The homo genus is about 2 million years old, still not old enough for them to be there when america was joined with the rest of the world.

You would be surprised. Native Americans were there for centuries, exactly how long is unknown, but they were there for a long time before the Europeans arrived. And farther north the Eskimo culture was in that country for a long time and still are. Chinese and Japanese beliefs hold that when their cultures migrated to those lands it was centuries ago.

There have been humans in many areas of the world for a very long time, it's pretty clear that humans migrated around the lands as they drifted apart.

Humans may be more lazy and incapable of barely walking to the bathroom without complaining that it's too much effort in this day and age, but back then humans were go-getters who went where better hunting prospects could be found.

Smokescreened84

The commonly accepted theory is that the native Americans came from Russia through land bridge to Alaska (it's only 55 miles apart)

The question we're asking here is how Europeans got there.

Well early humans did have very primitive forms of sea going travel, and I mean really primitive, back in those days so it's possible that a mass exodus of early humans travelled by early sea going travel by using shallows along the coast lines to get there.

It isn't hard to figure that out, shallows are close to land. They would have stopped off at particular points, examined the land for any potentially good hunting and some would have stayed while the others kept going. They used small paddle boats made from skins, wood and other components to move along the shallows, much like what early fishermen used to do when they began to harvest from the ocean. Going long distances was always quite the endeavour so they would make larger, much stronger forms of sea travel craft and those would be taken apart once they found good land and the salvaged materials would be used for huts and hunting tools. If it couldn't be taken apart they would just leave it there or use it again if able.

It's possible, we don't have anyone alive from those times to tell us exactly what happened, but we do know that humans fairly migrated around the world. I remember reading about the remains of an old viking ship that were found and they were a lot older than had been expected, so it's possible that it was one of many ships used to migrate to another land and left to rot.

Unless they were going across the Bering Strait they still had to cross thousands of miles of ocean. And what's more likely: that people walked thousands of miles from Europe all the way across Asia, built boats, then crossed thousands of miles of water to land in America? Or that people from northeast Asia hiked the 50 miles or so across the land bridge over the Bering Strait?

If you've got a time machine handy, we could always just go back to those times and ask them how they did it.
