Newbish, hypothetical Ipod question

I am thinking about buying an Ipod. I have a question: if I get a used one, and it has songs on it, can I back up those songs?

I just got the new creative zen and its pretty damn good. Only thing is it doesn't have that much memory.

Yeah, sticking to flash memory was a bad move on Creative's end. But, the M goes up to 60GB which is reasonable. Also, the display on the unit is simply amazing.
