Named after the character Private Wilhelm from The Charge at Feather River, the Wilhelm scream is a stock sound effect used in over 216 films, and it even made its way into the game Red Dead Redemption. For your viewing pleasure, here are some compilations of Wilhelm screams:

I try to put these things out of my head because they irritate me to no end when I notice them. Like the baby crying or children laughing stock sound effects, I hate them so much now because I notice them every time.

Yeah I know that scream but it's not the one I actually hear the most. There's this lower pitched one along the lines of "ooooo-waugh" that I hear it every other commerical and video game involving somebody falling or getting hit with something. It's about as common as that damn backwards match sound they use for all fire ignition.

You can even see it in video games, but the only example I can think of right now is Red Dead Redemption. I heard it several times in that game.

Lol yeah I've known about that scream for quite a while. It originated from some 1930s movie I think. I recognize it every time I hear it, so whatever movie I'm watching it will ruin the mood if its just randomly placed in there. Quite funny I think.

It also sounds like Rockstar's brand of humor. Whether they did it as a joke or not is hard to say.

Well, it's from the Warner Brothers stock library, and it was part of it even when they used it for the Wilhelm scene anyway. If they had to pay someone royalties for it, I'm sure they'd use something else.

I always enjoyed hearing it as a delayed sound from when someone dies or when some guy's head is blown off yet you still get the Wilhelm scream lol.

That is used for is the Academy building in Starcraft. Starcraft seems to use quite a few sound effects that I've heard many places.

I heard it during Lord of the Rings. Which is funny because the particular scene was very serious so I wasnt expecting this gag to be in the middle of it.

Yeah, I still get pissed when I hear the Doom monster sound effects in games and movies. Make you own god damn demon grunts! I think that scream sound effect was used in Command an Conquer for when soldiers where burned by flame throwers...

that is cool, never knew what it was called but I knew it was a Hollywood "meme" of sorts.

There is another scream out there, used not as frequently as the Wilhelm scream, but still used multiple times. Basically, it is a placeholder scream for anyone that is falling off a cliff or something. Its really long and gets kinda hoarse at the end

"AhhhhhhrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaAHAHHHHHHHHHH"

If you ever fell off the edge in the original Dark Forces, you will know what scream I mean.

Well, i can't say that description helps much :P, and I never played Dark Forces, but I wonder if you're talking about the scream someone else mentioned above and which I pointed out is in Starcraft.

Yeh I hear that scream a lot in many movies. There are a lot more screams/ sound effects though

- The insane tantrum

- The Howie scream

- The devil laugh (heard in South park and Independence day)

I remember finding out about this years ago on a tv show, I think either on Discovery or Space Network (both Canadian) but it talked about the history of it, how it became a sort of joke, and it also touched on a few others. And this totally brings me back to the screams in the first Command and Conquer, the flamethrower scream was so amusing.
