I dig Nirvana, hell I liked them pretty much when no one outside the Pacific Northwest did. But I'm sick of this idea that Cobain was "the voice of a generation", or that there was something deep and profound in his lyrics. By his own admission lyrics were pretty much an afterthought to him, often times made up in the studio as they were recording the song.
How does that make their music any less great?[QUOTE="Kevlar101"][QUOTE="worlock77"]

Point out where I said that it did.
Ok...... sorry[QUOTE="Kevlar101"]Well, their album "Nevermind" was their peek and when their music was at its greatest, but anything else was ok.megageneNah. Any real Nirvana fan knows that In Utero was their best album. Good point..... Bleach was only OK, but Nevermind and In Utero were their peak of music without a doubt.
Definitely an influential band, but one I never completely latched on to.
I think a lot of Cobain's legacy was built due in part to his suicide at 27 which prompted a lot of the "what ifs" surrounding him as a songwriter and Nirvana as a band.
I'll add to that...even though I personally do LOVE Nirvana, I've gotta opine that they weren't all that GREAT. Although there are qualities to their music (and their whole attitude/style/etc/whatever) that are incredibly appealing to me on a subjective and personal level, they just weren't that great songwriters or musicians. I'm not gonna say that they were garbage, or anything like that. And everyone in the band was certainly talented to some degree. But to a large extent, it was just a case of lightning striking. Circumstances just happened to align in such a way as to allow them to become such a huge cultural influence. That was certainly partly their doing...after all, they still made the music. But the fact that we're even talking about them today, the fact that anyone even considers them legendary, is largely because they just got lucky. They were in the right place and the right time to strike a chord with the public using music that really wasn't all that impressive. But yeah...I loved them back then and I still love them. That doesn't mean that they were just that good. There's a difference between what I like, and what's great.I dig Nirvana, hell I liked them pretty much when no one outside the Pacific Northwest did. Bleach was not all that good....... but Nevermind had great songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Come as You Are" and "Lithium" and "In Bloom". Great songs. In Utero had "Heart Shaped Box" which could be my favorite by Nirvana, and "Milk It", "All Apologies", "Rape Me" and "Dumb" which were also pretty great.
Nirvana is not greatness. The only people who think Nirvana is greatest are those who listen to the radio only. -Tish-I never listen to radio  your point is invalid. Well, their album 'Bleach' was bad...... but if you take songs like 'Come as you Are', 'Lithium', 'Breed' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in their album Nevermind........ and songs like 'Heart Shaped Box', 'All Apologies', 'Dumb', and 'Very Ape' form their album In Utero....... those are all great songs, and it shows that Bleach was just a bad album, and that all the greats were in Nevermind and In Utero.Nirvana, and Kurt Cobain, are overrated as hell. They were okay, but come on....

Agreed, but I love both.
Bleach was Nirvana's best I reckon, while Facelift was AiC's best.

I still like Nirvana, but not as much as I used to. I used to listen to Nirvana alot when I was in 11th grade. One of the most overrated bands of all time. Kurt could barely sing and his playing wasn't great either.
