Listened to a couple of Husker Du songs since they were mentioned. They sound more like R.E.M. than anything else. While I don't mind R.E.M. (I have 2 of their albums) not really what I was looking for. Or maybe R.E.M. sounds like them. I didn't actually start really listening to music up until 2000. Eh, I was 17 then. So I am kind of a n00b when it comes to music. Please nobody shoot me.

Later Husker Du sounds like R.E.M., or any poppy alt. rock from the late 80s.

Earlier Husker Du was hardcore punk. Go listen to Zen Arcade if you want to hear Hardcore Punk Husker Du become Alt. Rock Husker Du.

REM's first album was their best when they were raw and unmotivated by the mainstream. They are now a perfectly acceptable mainstread alt band but they lost their edge.:(

Everything before Document was good pop music; now it's more of the same with every new release.

Everything you can find Nirvana made is great, as is Alice In Chains. For newer Nirvana listeners and those who weren't around but are sick of hearing about it, you cannot underestimate how shocking a change it was from all the other mainstream music when it came out. I still remember the night I got it, drove all night around with my best friend just blasting it and in a trance.

I am listening to the Zen Arcade on youtube. This is definitely a lot better. What is the deal? Why are their so many Zen Arcades? Or is it just the whole album?

I can't believe Mudhoney hasn't been mentioned yet. You guys suck at grunge.

Check out:

Mudhoney
Melvins
Meat Puppets (Too High To Die is their "look we're grunge" album)

You'll probably be into dinosaur jr too. Get on this, ignore the rest of the thread except for Husker Du.

I have Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days by Tool. I gotta say I like Nirvana more, maybe it is just because I am new to Nirvana and am not tired of listening to them yet.

Technically Mudhoney was already mentioned. By me the TC in a link to a list of grunge bands and I believeEddie5vs1mentioned them too. I have not yet listened to them yet, so I will make sure I listen to them when I get a chance. Especially since there is someone to back up one of the bands on the list.

Tool is one of my favorite bands (in my top ten), but I think both bands are a little over-praised...

Yeah. The whole album is on Youtube, as well as some outtakes and individual songs.

effena

It's a portmanteau of "faux" and "alt."

I'm calling Tool "fake alternative metal."

I actually copied and pasted that, but if you want to know how to make that symbol without copying and pasting I will tell you. Hold alt and type 0198 on the num pad = Æ. Here is a link.

Edit: Here is a link for a whole bunch of characters.

Just add a 0 before any of those 3 digit numbers.

Yea, but I still think that Nevermind is their weakest.

Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Stone Temple Pilots, Mother Love Bone, and Mudhoney are all better. As for Nirvana albums, I prefer Bleach.

And the Pixies. I've only skimmed through the thread, but I've not seen them mentioned to an extent that I'd like.

Green River as well(even if they partially became Mudhoney afterwards, if I recall). Temple of the Dog works too.

soundgarden was the best grunge band hands down. I honestly think nevermind is vastly overrated. I like about 4 songs on itFrKnPuertoRican

Anything by Tool > Anything by Nirvana

King_Stones

This man speaks the truth. Tool's albums are among the most visionary and musically brilliant produced in the last 10 years. Undertow is arguably their worst though. Listen to Lateralus or AEnima if you are considering getting into them, but bewarned: Once you become obsessed with Tool (As I have) you don't really want to listen to much other music anymore.

You guys managed to get me listening to Undertow again instead of those bands I haven't heard. Seriously, though I have heard more people say Tool is their favorite band than any other band. I actually prefer A Perfect Cirlce over Tool. I only have Mer De Noms and Thirteenth step.
