I'd have to say "There Will be Blood", "The Shining", and "2001: A Space Odyssey" This may be due to the fact that I know more about music then films, and these three films have the best fitting soundtracks I've ever heard.

My favorite movie is Aliens from what I can remember.

Also really liked the Shawshank Redemption and Castaway.

I think the films I've rewatched the most are Ghostbusters, Airplane and Groundhog Day. Highbrow stuff, I know.

I'm going to say The Lord of the Rings, as a single unit, but if I have to pick, The Return of the King.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut is the first one that comes to mind. I can't really choose a best movie ever, but it is certainly one of the best.

Avatar. James Cameron is truly the master auteur. Every film movement form German Expressionism to the French New Wave has been leading up to the divinely crafted Avatar. I think the ticket sales speak volumes by themself. No piece of cinema, nay no piece of art has been able to reach as wide an audience while inspiring hope in their hearts as Avatar. I believe that this film has set humanity on a new course towards enlightenment and acceptance never before imaginable. Not only is Avatar the greatest gift to mankind it is also its greatest achievement.

I will be respectful to your opinion but to say that it is the best thing since man kind is a big stretch. Electricity was the best thing for mankind.

I tend to favor the big cIassics, the ones with an all-star cast or a great screenplay.

The Sting

The Godfather 1 and 2

Patton

We Were Soldiers

I have a hard time thinking of any one movie in particular. I've liked quite a few movies, but it's hard to think of them all.

I would say Lawrence of Arabia. It does an incredible job establishing an epic scale that's entirely convincing.

So I've seen this phrase tossed around quite a bit in movie threads. So I ask you, what IS the best movie ever? I'm just curious on what people may come up with, and what others may think of the choices.

Up front warning, please be respectful of others opinions.

For me, to this day The Untouchables still stand in my top 5 of all time. Everyone in that cast did a fantastic job. Another one would be Fellowship of the Ring. Fantasic translation from book to screen.

What are your picks? Once again, do not come in here and post "Insert movie name" sucks. I'm trying to get discussion going in a positive way.

I'd have to say The Matrix due to the fact that it still stands as an incredibly interesting story and a beyond-great action movie (and I love the parallels to Plato's Allegory of the Cave) even after its cinema tricks have been duplicated over and over. I would say The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but that would be cheating.

EDIT: Damn, forgot about Amadeus completely. That might even surpass The Matrix.

Both of those are pretty danged awesome. It's always hard to pick THE best since does that mean the one I would watch over and over, or the one that is most "enetertaining"? I have decided to cheat and list 6 since they all tie as my favorites: Lord of the Rings (as long as you fast forward through all the Frodo's eyes scenes) is ALWAYS watchable Untouchables is simply fun and watchable. I also LOVE Ocean's Eleven. Simply a blast to watch (character interactions are awesome) Sherlock Holmes is GREAT! Princess Bride STILL has my heart to this day. Stardust... THE ONLY MOVIE I will ever describe as having a heart and soul. Honorable Mention: I watch "Not Another Teen Movie" every time it is on (yeah it sucks but I like it)
